Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some Malm furniture from IKEA and am really pleased with the simple design and quality. However, I have noticed a few small scratches, which bothers me somewhat since I usually take good care of my furniture. So, I have a question for experienced users or experts here in the forum:
What specific steps can I take to prevent scratches on Malm furniture permanently? Are there particular care tips, protective products, or everyday habits that can help provide the best possible protection for these sensitive surfaces?
I would greatly appreciate practical advice and recommendations based on the characteristics of the Malm series. Thanks in advance!

Basically, protecting Malm furniture surfaces depends on avoiding mechanical stress as much as possible.
A classic way to prevent scratches is to use felt pads under chairs or decorative objects. This is especially helpful for furniture with smooth surfaces.
I also recommend not placing sharp-edged items directly on the furniture. For example, if you put down jewelry or keys, always use a mat or a small dish.
Cleaning products should be mild – harsh cleaners often damage the surface and make it more prone to wear.

I would even take it one step further and recommend using felt coasters for vases or lamps as well. Especially with Malm furniture, where the surface is very smooth and sensitive, even small movements are noticeable.
And let’s be honest, fewer scratches mean you can enjoy your furniture longer. 🙂
Oh, and definitely avoid abrasive cleaning sponges—they are a nightmare for these kinds of surfaces.
Thanks already for the previous tips, they have been very helpful.
One more question: Do Malm furniture pieces have any special surface coating that can be treated or maintained over time? Or is it more of a surface where you should avoid using liquids or cleaning products as much as possible?
I’m interested because I’m currently preparing for a move and want to take preventive measures.

The Malm series typically features a melamine-coated surface, which makes the furniture fairly resistant to moisture and many household substances. However, this surface is prone to scratches because it is relatively thin.
Regular treatment with traditional wood oils or waxes is not recommended here, as these surfaces behave very differently compared to solid wood. It is better to wipe them with a slightly damp, soft cloth and avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaners altogether.
When moving, it is worth covering all the furniture well with blankets or padding and avoiding impacts. Of course, this is sometimes easier said than done, but exercising caution really pays off in this case.

It doesn’t absorb into the surface but creates a protective layer, making it a bit more resistant to dust and minor scratches.
However, it’s not a miracle solution and certainly doesn’t replace proper everyday care.
Honestly, for me, the most important thing is simply not to toss things like a bunch of keys on it right away 😉
