Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Malm bed from IKEA and would like to apply a protective varnish to make the surface more resistant to scratches and stains. My main question is: Are there special protective varnishes specifically designed for Malm furniture, meaning products that are optimally matched to the surface and material?

I’ve heard that there are different varnishes for particleboard with melamine coating, but I’m unsure whether a special product is really necessary or if regular furniture varnishes or clear coats from a hardware store are sufficient. I would appreciate any advice.

Hi Asyatra!

I think your question is really good, as many people underestimate how different the surfaces of some furniture can be. MALM furniture usually consists of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which already provides a fairly durable protective layer. Therefore, a regular clear coat or even furniture polish is often sufficient.

As far as I know, there are no special paints specifically for MALM, since the surface does not need to be sanded – most paints do not adhere well to it. A protective film like transparent foil is usually the best option if you don’t want to alter the surface 🙂

Of course, you can also use special water-based paints, but be careful: if the paint does not adhere well, it can cause unsightly bubbles. So I would recommend trying a small test on an inconspicuous spot first!

For additional information: MALM furniture is typically made from particleboard with a melamine coating. These surfaces are very smooth and have low porosity, which generally makes applying paint more difficult.

Specially formulated protective coatings for this type of surface are rarely available on the market. Instead, water-based clear coats are recommended, as they form a thin layer and remain as flexible as possible.

Important: Before applying, the surface must be lightly sanded (very fine sandpaper, e.g., grit 240–320) to improve paint adhesion. Without this preparation, it is very likely that the paint will later chip or form bubbles.

Recommendation: Use transparent, water-based acrylic paint for furniture—available at hardware stores—and test it first on an inconspicuous area. According to manufacturers, oil-based paints are generally unsuitable for plastic coatings.

There are no special protective coatings for MALM furniture.

I am considering using clear varnish from the hardware store.

Lightly sand the surface beforehand; otherwise, nothing will stick.

Particle boards with a melamine coating do not require special paints.

Water-based clear varnish works fine, just don’t forget to sand beforehand.

The standard melamine coating used on MALM furniture is already very durable by default. Since special protective coatings are rarely available, I would recommend using a fine-pored, water-based clear coat with good adhesion if needed.

Before application, the surface should be gently sanded to improve adhesion.

It is also important to check the ingredients to ensure the coating does not react aggressively and damage the original surface.
