Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some Malm furniture from IKEA and am really pleased with the simple design and quality. However, I have noticed a few small scratches, which bothers me somewhat since I usually take good care of my furniture. So, I have a question for experienced users or experts here in the forum:
What specific steps can I take to prevent scratches on Malm furniture permanently? Are there particular care tips, protective products, or everyday habits that can help provide the best possible protection for these sensitive surfaces?
I would greatly appreciate practical advice and recommendations based on the characteristics of the Malm series. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,
After giving some more thought yesterday to the care of Malm furniture, here’s a quick suggestion from me:
For those of you who are a bit more adventurous and don’t want to settle for basic protective treatments, you might consider occasionally rubbing the visible surfaces with furniture wax paste. This creates a delicate protective layer that doesn’t last forever but effectively helps prevent minor scratches and stains.
Of course, this is not for those who want to keep their furniture in perfect condition, but it’s just right for a lively piece with a touch of patina. ;-)
Wishing you continued success!

I really appreciate how different approaches come together here: from very practical solutions (felt pads & protective mats) to emotional perspectives (signs of life) and possible protective films.
Especially with sensitive surfaces like those on Malm furniture, it’s important to feel comfortable with what you’re doing. The furniture is part of our daily environment and should bring us joy, not stress over minor details.
For those who want to be very precise, it’s especially important to ensure that no dust or sand particles are rubbed across the surface when wiping. These are often invisible causes of scratches.

Here’s a small tip from me: If you ever notice minor scratches that aren’t too deep, effective and inexpensive remedies like a cleaning paste made from fine polishing agents (e.g., furniture polish with micro-abrasives) can be helpful.
This can often significantly reduce the visibility of the scratches. Of course, it doesn’t replace prevention, but it can refresh the appearance of the furniture a bit.
After all, we want the Malm furniture to look nice, even as it experiences everyday use. 😉
