Hello everyone, I have a specific question and need your experience: How can I childproof Ikea Besta doors without complicated modifications? It is important to me that the solution is easy to install, does not require major changes to the furniture, and reliably prevents small children from opening the doors. I have already considered magnetic locks or clamp locks but am unsure what is truly practical, discreet, and above all safe. If you have experience with specific products, DIY solutions, or tricks that work well for Besta, I would really appreciate detailed descriptions or tips. Thanks in advance!

Make sure the magnet is strong enough

I agree, cheap magnets wear out quickly or do not hold properly. It’s better to buy a good quality set.

Maybe you already have a model in mind?

So far, I’m undecided between magnetic locks and clamp or snap locks, ideally without drilling.

They are very compact and usually fit easily behind the doors

How complicated is the installation of these magnetic locks on Besta exactly? Do you need special tools, or is a small drill sufficient for the screw-on version? I would like to be able to remove them later without leaving any marks.

It would be great if someone could explain how to install these parts, in case anyone has already tried this on Besta.

This topic resonates with me since I have young children myself and faced the same challenge. For our Besta combinations, I used self-adhesive locks. There were no drill holes involved, but unfortunately, these often leave sticky residue that can be easily removed with some warm water and cleaning detergent.

What I learned is that children don’t forget quickly and will test boundaries. It is important that the lock is truly reliable. Magnetic locks are great if you’ve already screwed them in, but if you want to avoid any modifications, clamp or snap locks are a good alternative.

I hope this helps you with your decision.

I used clamp locks that you simply clamp onto the door frames. No screws, no marks. They work well but can be a bit loose sometimes if the child pulls hard. For the small effort, they are quite suitable.

For a simple and secure solution without any modifications, I recommend trying fasteners with Velcro strips combined with magnetic locks. Velcro strips can be attached to the inside of Besta doors to additionally secure the latch. This creates a double safety mechanism without the need for drilling. Although installation takes slightly more time, these fasteners are almost invisible and very effective, especially for curious little explorers who are eager to open things.
