Good morning everyone,
I purchased the Brimnes wardrobe from IKEA, which has the typical white coating that looks like either a foil or high-gloss lacquer finish. It is important to me to keep this surface clean and free of scratches for as long as possible.
My specific question is: What is the best way to care for the coating on the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe without damaging it or leaving unpleasant residues? Which cleaning products and methods are recommended? I am also interested in tips for daily maintenance to prevent the surface from becoming dull or developing cracks.
Has anyone had experience with this particular piece of furniture and can offer practical advice on which care methods are truly effective and what should be avoided?

Hello Pabla,
your question about maintaining the coating on IKEA Brimnes furniture is very relevant and deserves a detailed answer. The surface of Brimnes furniture is usually made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating or a thin foil on MDF, sometimes with a high-gloss lacquer. These materials are particularly sensitive to harsh cleaning agents and mechanical stress.
For cleaning, I recommend:
- Use a soft, damp microfiber cloth moistened only with clean water.
- For tougher stains, you can use a mild all-purpose cleaner without solvents or abrasives. Be sure to test it first on an inconspicuous spot.
- After cleaning, wipe the surface dry with a cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating and causing the foil to peel.
What to avoid at all costs:
- Abrasive cleaners or rough sponges that can scratch the coating.
- Alcohol-based cleaners or aggressive solvents, as they can dissolve or dull the foil.
For maintenance, you can also treat the surface every few weeks with a special plastic care product. These products prevent the foil from drying out and help avoid micro-cracks.
I am curious how often you plan to clean the cabinet and whether it is located in a humid environment. This would affect the choice of products.

Does anyone have tests or experience confirming that the usual practice is actually better? Because I have seen that some special plastic care products also provide protection on the reverse side, which simple cleaners cannot offer.
Also: Is the coating on the Brimnes a melamine film, a foil overlay, or paint? These have different resistance tolerances.

In fact, there are independent material tests that examine melamine resin coatings and laminates: many of these tests show that neutral cleaning agents (pH-neutral to slightly alkaline) are best at preserving the surface. Furniture care products can be useful if they are silicone-free and tailored to the surface.

Also: Is the Brimnes coating a melamine film, a laminate overlay, or a paint finish?Based on my research and various user reports, Brimnes mainly features a melamine resin coating or a laminate foil on particleboard. A real paint finish is rather rare.
So if you’re looking for cleaning products, make sure they are suitable for melamine or plastic surfaces and do not contain waxes or oils that could leave residues.
