Hello everyone, I recently received Ikea Pax doors with glass fronts for my home and now I’m wondering about the best way to care for these doors to keep both the glass and the frames in good condition. I am especially interested in which cleaning products are suitable, how often the cleaning should be done, and if there are any special tips to avoid scratches or damage. Are there also recommendations for maintaining the hinges or seals? I want to avoid making any mistakes since the doors seem quite delicate. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

It is best to use lukewarm water with a little dish soap for the glass. Do not use any abrasive cleaners, as they will scratch the glass. For the frame, a dry cloth or a microfiber cloth is sufficient. You can lubricate the hinges with a small amount of sewing machine oil if they squeak.

Hello Moseta, I would like to answer your question in more detail because caring for Ikea Pax doors with glass fronts involves some important details. You should clean the glass with a mild cleaning agent, as zarHenning already mentioned, for example a mixture of lukewarm water and a small amount of dish soap. However, never spray the solution directly onto the glass; instead, apply it to the cloth to avoid liquid getting onto the frames or hinges.

For maintaining the frames, which are usually made of wood or MDF with a coating, I recommend using a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth without any harsh cleaners. This prevents the frame from swelling or being damaged.

Regarding the hinges, which are mostly metal, they benefit from occasional lubrication if they squeak or are difficult to open or close. A special lubricating oil or sewing machine oil works well here. Be careful not to get any oil on the glass or door surfaces.

It is best to avoid abrasive sponges or sharp objects, as both the glass fronts and frames can be easily scratched. Personally, I recommend cleaning once a month unless there are visible stains. For heavily used doors, more frequent cleaning may be necessary.

Hope this helps you!

That sounds pretty relaxed! I would add that you can take it easy with this – the doors don’t need to be polished daily. A good microfiber cloth quickly becomes a real all-rounder for me.

And just to be safe: avoid cleaning agents that act like abrasives, or the glass will eventually get really worn out. 😉 Simply use water and a mild cleaner, stay relaxed, and the doors will look like new.

It’s interesting how cautious everyone is with cleaners. Of course, you shouldn’t use harsh chemicals on glass surfaces—but honestly, glass is quite durable, isn’t it? In my opinion, you can be a bit more confident as long as you avoid abrasive materials like steel wool. A mildly aggressive glass cleaner has never caused me any problems and usually leaves a better result than just water with dish soap.

What matters more, in my view, is the right technique: wiping in circular motions or straight lines, but never rubbing dry, as that only causes scratches. And if you really want to go all out, just use a lint-free cloth to clean thoroughly—don’t be afraid to use a little more equipment on the glass.

I agree with that and understand the desire for efficiency. At the same time, I speak from experience: especially with IKEA doors that have delicate glass panels, I once cleaned too aggressively and then ended up annoyed by fine scratches in the glass. They’re not noticeable right away but become visible in the light.

I think a cautious middle ground works well: a mild cleaner with a soft cloth is great. And if, like Moseta, you want to keep the doors in good condition for a long time, this care is worth it. Also, gently opening and closing the doors helps reduce wear on hinges and frames.

A bit of patience pays off in the end, in my opinion.
