ElmanHello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of a new IKEA Metod kitchen in my home and have a specific question: How can I design and arrange this kitchen to include child-friendly features? Specifically, I would like to know which equipment and modifications are recommended to make the Metod kitchen safe and practical for young children—such as optimal cabinet heights, secure locks, durable materials, and features that allow children to participate appropriately for their age or at least be safe in the kitchen. I am also interested in which IKEA products are particularly suitable for this purpose or which ones others have had good experiences with. I would appreciate concrete tips and suggestions, including advice on assembly, since I will be doing much of the work myself.
For designing a child-friendly IKEA Metod kitchen, I recommend the following points:
- Use child safety locks for drawers and cabinets, which IKEA also offers as accessories (e.g., the SECURE series).
- Incorporate drawers instead of doors in lower sections, as they are easier to access and can be better secured with child locks.
- Use tall cabinets for dangerous items such as knives and cleaning products to keep them out of children’s reach.
- Choose safe, wipeable surfaces to maintain hygiene standards when children are involved.
- I also recommend using soft corner protectors on countertop edges to help prevent injuries.
- When planning, set minimum heights for electrical outlets to keep them out of children’s reach, and use outlet covers for added safety.
- The installation of the Metod units should pay special attention to anchoring to walls and floors to prevent tipping hazards.
Additionally, it is sensible to design the kitchen so that children can safely assist using a sturdy, low step stool, including a small drawer for their own dishes or kitchen utensils. This encourages independence and safe interaction with the kitchen.

I fully understand that you want your new IKEA Metod kitchen to be not only functional but also safe and child-friendly. That can be quite challenging—I had similar concerns with our first kitchen.
I want to strongly emphasize that! I once witnessed a cabinet tip dangerously because it wasn’t secured properly when a child pulled on it.
In my view, it’s also important to involve children early in daily kitchen routines – for example, we set up a small drawer specifically for the little ones, where they can keep safe kitchen tools and their own dishes. This not only keeps the kitchen safe but also teaches children to handle things respectfully.
If you like, I can also share some tips on safe step stools that work well with the Metod system.

Hey Elman, what a great project—a child-friendly Metod kitchen! That’s really important and so much fun when you set up the kitchen in a way that includes the little ones!
At our home, I’ve specially arranged a lower drawer that contains only children’s dishes—it’s a big hit! 🙂
We also chose soft-close drawer slides that don’t slam, and by the way, soft dampers on the doors are highly recommended. This way there are no pinching accidents.
I can only agree with that! Kids are like little whirlwinds—so it’s invaluable when everything is easy to clean.
Very important: children are curious! That’s why lockable cabinet doors for cleaning products are an absolute must. And with small step stools, you can invite them to help with cooking. That not only ensures safety but also makes cooking really fun!

In addition to the tips already mentioned, here are some precise points I considered in my planning:
- The use of full-extension drawers in Metod cabinets works well with child safety locks, as you can selectively lock drawers.
- For the countertop, rounding the edge is recommended (IKEA offers some countertops with rounded edges) to help prevent injuries.
- I also advise fitting electrical outlets with multiple child safety covers and, if possible, opting for flush-mounted models.
- The flooring should be slip-resistant, which is especially important when children are playing in the kitchen.
- IKEA offers height-adjustable cabinets that can be adapted to your family’s height—this allows you to store important items out of children’s reach while still maintaining a child-friendly environment.
The focus should always be on combining safety with children’s involvement. It is worthwhile to create a detailed list of necessary measures and additional products before ordering components to plan the assembly process effectively.
