Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of an IKEA Metod kitchen island and want to maximize storage space without making the island look bulky or overwhelm the room. My questions are: What is the best approach for selecting and assembling the Metod base cabinets to optimally combine the available cabinet modules? Which drawer and internal organization systems do you recommend for making intelligent use of storage space? Also, are there any specific tips for securing or stabilizing the island on the floor, especially since it is freestanding? I appreciate any advice that can help simplify the installation and maximize storage.

When installing the kitchen island, make sure to securely fasten the cabinets together and install at least four floor anchors. Use full-extension drawers behind wide cabinet doors for better access. VARIERA inserts help keep things organized.

The countertop on the island must be securely fastened. It is best to connect all the modules first, then place the countertop on top and screw it down. For Metod, planning the interior fittings is crucial for optimizing storage space.

That sounds interesting. Could you briefly explain how full-extension drawers are implemented with Metod? Do you need to buy specific cabinets, or is there a retrofit system available?

I’m asking because I want to do as much as possible myself without relying on complete solutions, to stay flexible.

Full-extension drawers with Metod are usually separate modules, not retrofits. This means you buy cabinets with a drawer system, not standard cabinets with doors. For flexibility, you can mix and match.

Thank you for the clarification. I will pay closer attention to drawer cabinets during the planning process to maximize storage space.

One last question regarding the countertop: Are there any special considerations when installing heavy materials like quartz? Do I need to reinforce or support the cabinets additionally to ensure long-term stability?

Definitely. Quartz slabs are very heavy and require a particularly sturdy substructure. The Metod cabinet frames can generally support the weight well, but it is important that the cabinets are securely connected and placed on a perfectly level surface.

I recommend installing additional cross braces or a base panel under the island to evenly distribute the weight. The countertop should also be fastened to the cabinets with appropriate screws that are at least 35 mm (1.4 inches) long to ensure a permanent secure hold.

Another option is to reinforce the countertop with metal brackets on the sides, especially for islands that have an overhang on one side. Do you already have a specific idea of the island size and how many cabinet units you plan to use?
