Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Metod kitchen countertop from the laminate range, specifically the version with a white surface and wood-look edge. Unfortunately, some small scratches have appeared on it, which are especially visible in the light. Since these are rather typical wear and surface damages, I would like to know: What is the best way to repair these scratches?

I am particularly interested in which products or methods have proven effective without having to replace the entire countertop. I have considered polishing pastes, special repair kits, or even filling in the scratches. It is important that the surface does not become unsightly or patchy, as I value a uniform finish.

Does anyone have experience with IKEA Metod countertops or similar laminate surfaces? Which preparations and materials do you recommend? And what is the best step-by-step approach to ensure a lasting result?

Thanks in advance for your helpful tips!

Hello Yvestu,

When repairing scratches on IKEA Metod countertops, especially in the laminate area, the top priority is to avoid further damaging the surface or using inappropriate products. Laminate is basically a plastic coating on particleboard.

From my experience and various tests, I can recommend:

- First, thoroughly clean the surface (without aggressive cleaners, preferably using mild dish soap and water).
- Minor scratches can often be gently polished with fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 1200 or higher). Use circular motions and proceed sparingly.
- After that, special laminate care products or a clear polish can be used to restore the glossy surface.
- For deeper scratches, repair kits containing acrylic or plastic fillers are suitable. These need to be color-matched as closely as possible (there are kits specifically designed for laminate).

However, be cautious: it is important to test the repair in an inconspicuous area first. Color matching is often the most challenging part, as laminate usually has a subtle pattern rather than just a single color.

Besides repairs, it can also help to treat scratches with a color-matched touch-up pen (available at hardware stores). However, the durability is often limited.

I hope this gives you a rough idea.

I would do it like this:

- Clean the surface
- Lightly sand with 1200-grit sandpaper
- Use laminate repair paste or a touch-up pen
- Allow to dry

Make sure to match the color carefully, as this is crucial.

I find it helpful to also consider the reasoning behind this recommendation. The surface of a laminate board is not homogeneous like wood but consists of a specially coated foil. Mechanical sanding could damage this layer too much and lead to visible color variations.

Instead, I would suggest first analyzing the cause of the scratches: Are they superficial abrasion of the coating or deeper mechanical damage?

If it's only superficial, refreshing with a special laminate polish or a nano-sealant might be sufficient, possibly combined with targeted cleaning.

However, if the scratches are deeper, as KIN42 describes, only filling with a repair kit matched to the pattern provides reliable results. I would advise against sanding in general without detailed knowledge beforehand, as this could roughen the matte surface and cause uneven reflections.

What also interests me: Has anyone had experience with the durability of such repairs on IKEA Metod? It is often said these are short-term solutions that need touching up again after a few months.

For additional information and a practical approach:

- IKEA Metod countertops in the laminate range are typically coated with melamine resin, which forms a durable but thin protective layer.

- Minor scratches that do not penetrate the melamine surface can usually be improved with special laminate polishing agents. These fill micro-scratches and provide visual smoothing.

- Deeper damage requires the use of repair wax or acrylic filler in a matching color. Such kits are available in wood- and plastic-based versions, and compatibility with laminate should be ensured.

- Precision is necessary when applying the filler to avoid discoloration or visible edges.

- After drying, the surface can be gently leveled with very fine sandpaper, then sealed or polished.

- It should be noted that repairs are always a visual compromise. Perfect restoration of a flawless laminate surface is rarely possible. If the countertop is heavily damaged, replacement is often more sensible.

- For prevention, I recommend using mats while cooking and avoiding scratches from hard objects.

These guidelines are based on material testing and experience in kitchen construction.
