Hello everyone,

I have had some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series at home for a while now. Since we have several small children who often run around, draw, and sometimes spill liquids, I am wondering how to best care for and protect the Hemnes furniture to keep it looking nice for a long time.

I am especially interested in which cleaning products are recommended, how to remove stains early, and whether there are specific protective measures that households with children should consider.

I look forward to your tips, including any personal experiences on what has proven effective in everyday life!

Hello miriamme,

Your question about maintaining IKEA Hemnes furniture in a household with children is very practical and important. Hemnes furniture is known for its solid wood and white lacquer finish, which can be quite sensitive to moisture and mechanical stress.

Here are some basic recommendations:

- For cleaning, a soft, slightly damp cloth works best. Be sure to use pH-neutral cleaners or mild soapy water to avoid damaging the lacquer.
- Avoid harsh cleaning agents, abrasive cleaners, or excessive water, as these can soften the lacquer.
- Stains should be removed as quickly as possible, ideally with a damp cloth. For stubborn stains, you can carefully test isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) on an inconspicuous spot first.
- To prevent scratches, it helps to protect furniture edges with transparent guards, especially if children frequently play around.
- Washable placemats and protective pads are very useful to protect against liquids.
- To prevent long-term damage, furniture can be regularly treated with wood wax or special care products designed for lacquered surfaces to maintain the protective layer.

I hope this helps! If you’d like, I can also provide specific product recommendations.

I always use a microfiber cloth and lukewarm water when something is sticky. Wiping it off quickly is essential. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, as they will immediately damage the paint.

For the organized care of Hemnes furniture in households with children, I recommend the following approach:

- Cleaning: First, remove dust from the furniture piece using a dry, soft cloth.
- For damp cleaning, use only slightly moistened cotton cloths.
- Prefer pH-neutral cleaning agents to protect the lacquered surface.
- Act immediately on liquid stains to prevent them from penetrating fine pores.
- Protective measures such as applying transparent edge protectors are useful to reduce mechanical damage.
- For lasting protection, a special care wax or furniture polish suitable for lacquered furniture, indicated on the packaging as compatible with Hemnes or lacquered wood, should be applied every few months.

Additionally, I recommend keeping the furniture out of direct sunlight and minimizing climate fluctuations, as these can negatively affect the lacquer layer.

If larger scratches or chips occur, they can be repaired with color-matched touch-up markers from IKEA or similar suppliers.

I can only confirm that, and I also use soft mats on the table – it saves stress and time.

A small lifehack: When the kids have been using felt-tip pens, toothpaste often helps as a gentle stain remover, but be sure to test it first on a small area!

Number plate magnets have also helped here to organize children’s toys on magnetic surfaces – this reduces accidental damage to the wood.

This way, the Hemnes surface stays fresh for longer, and everyday life with kids is much more enjoyable!

Hello miriamme,

I completely agree with Ixvin and would like to add that when liquids like juice or milk are spilled, it is especially important to immediately blot the furniture with a soft cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood fibers and damaging the finish.

I have also found that Hemnes furniture is better protected if you use not only placemats but also felt furniture pads under chairs or armchairs to reduce scratches on the finish when children move the furniture.

Regular maintenance, about every two to three months with a mild furniture wax, significantly extends the life of the finish. The wax should be applied thinly and polished with a soft cloth.

I hope these tips are helpful to you.
