Hello everyone,
I have had some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series at home for a while now. Since we have several small children who often run around, draw, and sometimes spill liquids, I am wondering how to best care for and protect the Hemnes furniture to keep it looking nice for a long time.
I am especially interested in which cleaning products are recommended, how to remove stains early, and whether there are specific protective measures that households with children should consider.
I look forward to your tips, including any personal experiences on what has proven effective in everyday life!

I completely agree with Ixvin and would like to add that when liquids like juice or milk are spilled, it is especially important to immediately blot the furniture with a soft clothExactly! Wiping up liquids immediately is crucial to prevent the wood from swelling and consequently the paint or finish from peeling or discoloring.
Additionally, I would recommend protecting furniture surfaces, especially with active children, by using transparent protective covers or acrylic mats that can be custom cut at stores like IKEA or specialty retailers. This makes a big difference, especially for dining tables.
A gentle reminder to children to be careful with the furniture can also have a lasting effect, without having to constantly clean up after them.
Hey miriamme and everyone else here!
I’m a big fan of the Hemnes furniture and really love the character of the wood, but yes... kids and furniture can definitely be challenging. 🙂
Here are some simple tips that have worked really well for us:
- Stackable storage baskets or boxes in the Hemnes shelving unit help keep everything tidy and store toys so the furniture doesn’t get scratched all the time.
- For quick cleaning of the white painted wood, I recommend damp microfiber cloths with a drop of mild dish soap – this works great when sticky hands leave marks.
- Stains from food or crafts can be easily removed with warm water and a wool sponge; I wouldn’t suggest using stiff brushes.
- Additionally, we protect the furniture with plastic protective films that are easy to remove and wash.
Don’t get discouraged, this kind of furniture is made for families and with a little effort it stays in great shape! Keep it up!
