Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of properly securing the shelves in my new IKEA Pax corner wardrobe. Since corner wardrobes are constructed somewhat differently than regular Pax wardrobes, I am unsure which fastening method is best here.

Specifically, I want to know the best way to firmly fix the shelves to the side panels so that they neither wobble nor sag over time, especially since the shelves under the corner section experience additional stress due to the unique shape.

Is it sufficient to use the included metal shelf supports? Or are additional rails or special brackets recommended?

I would appreciate practical experiences, detailed tips, or advice regarding the load-bearing capacity of the shelves in the corner area.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Fapida,

your question is very well posed, as corner cabinets with PAX are not entirely straightforward. The corner area presents some challenges due to the angled structure and often triangular shelves.

First: The standard metal shelf supports from IKEA are generally designed for flat side panels and support standard-sized shelves quite well. However, in corner cabinets, especially for the inner shelves, using additional reinforcement is often highly recommended.

I suggest you consider the following points:
- Check if your corner shelf has a central support or crossbars to prevent sagging. This is especially important when the shelves will carry heavy loads.
- The shelf supports should fit flush and stable; it helps to secure them with a small drop of assembly adhesive or acrylic sealant to prevent them from coming loose from the wood.
- A good method is installing additional angle brackets underneath the shelves, which are screwed to the underside of the shelf and attached to the back panel or wall. These help distribute the weight much better.
- For corner areas, you might also consider adding a small wooden strip (e.g., a glued laminated wood batten) along the edge of the shelf underneath the board to provide additional guidance and support.

I would also be interested to know what kind of load you are planning and whether you used the shelves included in the IKEA delivery or plan to cut them to size yourself.

I would simply use the IKEA shelf supports and make sure they are properly inserted. If the shelves sag, additional central supports or shelf brackets screwed underneath can help. Usually, that's all you need.

Hello Fapida,

An important point that Palenar mentioned is the center support. Especially in corner cabinets with the PAX system, longer or trapezoidal shelves can easily sag under load.

I recommend the following for secure attachment and support:
- Use the original IKEA shelf supports at all possible mounting points on the side panels. Make sure they are properly seated in the designated holes and not crookedly clicked in.
- For corner shelves that are not rectangular, center supports are almost essential. Here, you can use a sturdy metal rod with a small bearing surface that rests on the bottom of the cabinet.
- Alternatively, you can screw a thin shelf bracket lengthwise underneath the shelf to reduce bending.
- For cut-to-size shelves: make sure the edges are protected with edge banding to prevent moisture damage, which also increases stability.

Some minor pitfalls:
- Be sure to check the load capacity of the shelves – while the IKEA PAX shelves are quite sturdy, it’s always wise to include a safety margin.
- If you expect heavier loads than usual (e.g., books or equipment), it is worth using additional metal brackets screwed to the side panels and underneath the shelf.

Can you tell me how many shelves you are installing and whether you are using the shelves from the set or your own custom-cut boards?

Thank you for your detailed advice, Palenar!

I plan to mainly store clothes, boxes, and a few books in the corner cabinet, so nothing very heavy. The shelves are the original ones from IKEA; I haven’t planned any custom cuts yet.

I tend to use the IKEA shelf supports but had concerns because some of the shelves are cut at an angle, and I’m not sure if the brackets fit properly or if it would be better to add wooden strips myself for extra support.

Does anyone else have specific experience with the PAX corner unit, and what is the best way to secure the angled shelves?

Regarding the quantity: Two shelves rest on the corner surface, with two large shelves on each side of the corner, so about six in total.

Hello Fapida,

I have a PAX corner wardrobe at home myself and can understand your concerns. Especially with the angled shelves in the corners, I initially looked for a stable solution as well.

My experience is as follows: The supplied shelf supports are usually sufficient, provided they are correctly installed and the holes on the inside of the side panels are properly used.

Additionally, I attached small wooden strips under the corner shelves, placed exactly along the edges of the angled panels. These helped secure the shelves well and prevented any wobbling.

It is also important to align the shelves carefully and test them before securing them permanently. If possible, you can also reinforce the corners from underneath with thin metal brackets for extra stability.

Given the loads you describe, these measures should be enough. If you ever need to remove the shelves, the original shelf supports offer additional flexibility.

Have you already checked if there are enough pre-drilled holes in the side panels for the shelf supports to secure your shelves properly? If not, this could affect the stability.
