Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to buy a Pax wardrobe from Ikea because I need a lot of storage space. I have a question about whether there are especially wide shelves available for the Pax system—shelves that are wider than the standard ones and offer more surface area. Specifically, I’m interested to know if Ikea offers Pax shelves wider than the usual sizes (for example, wider than 100 cm (39 inches)) or if you generally need to rely on custom-made or DIY solutions for that.
I would appreciate any experiences and specific information, especially regarding the dimensions Ikea officially provides and possible modifications. Thanks!

Here’s a provocative theory: Ikea deliberately sells standard widths to force customers into modularity, which they then have to solve expensively with accessories. That’s an interesting perspective, but in my opinion, it’s rather unlikely. Ikea mainly targets mass production and the mass market, where standard dimensions make logistical sense.
Custom widths for individualization significantly increase inventory and production costs. This results in higher prices and more complex logistics.
Therefore, it is simply economically sensible to focus on a few standard dimensions, not necessarily a planned limitation to drive accessory sales.
Hello Editto,
I’d like to add a few basics: The Pax carcasses (that is, the cabinet frames) are designed for the mentioned widths of 50, 75, and 100 cm (approximately 20, 30, and 40 inches) – this includes the shelf widths. The shelves that you fit onto the side panels are correspondingly sized.
Wider shelves simply wouldn’t fit. While there is an option to adjust the cabinet depth or height, the width is fixed.
So if your question is whether Ikea Pax offers shelves wider than 100 cm (40 inches), the clear answer is: No.
As a tip: If you need more shelf space, many consider placing two 100 cm (40 inch) cabinets side by side and, for example, connecting them with a continuous shelf cut by a carpenter – this would be a stable, custom solution.

This way, you get larger surfaces without compromising structural integrity or being limited to standard flat-pack components. I have done this several times myself and am satisfied with the results.

The wider the shelf, the more weight it has to support, and the stability of Ikea shelves is designed for standard widths. Thanks to everyone, especially for the note about the structural load capacity. That is indeed an important factor for me.
I will consider combining two 100 cm (39 inches) Pax carcasses with custom-made shelves. I might have the shelves made from plywood, as they are quite sturdy.
Does anyone have experience with the depth of the Pax shelves? Are they about the same depth at a height of 235 cm (92 inches)? Also, how is the general load capacity of the shelves? Any additional tips on this would be great.
