Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of assembling an Ikea Pax wardrobe in a room with a sloped ceiling. The standard assembly instructions for Pax are quite clear, but I am wondering if there is a special guide or at least detailed advice on how to install Pax wardrobes safely and securely in sloped ceilings—especially when the wardrobe height needs to be adjusted to fit the slope or when cutting the side panels or shelves is required.

Does anyone have experience with Pax wardrobes in sloped ceilings, know of an official guide, or at least practical methods? I am particularly interested in the question of wall mounting, as the sloped ceiling presents a specific challenge there. Thanks in advance!

What is the maximum installation depth available at the lowest point?

The lowest point measures about 50 cm (20 inches) in depth, and the height at the lowest point is approximately 135 cm (53 inches). The ceiling height at the highest point is around 225 cm (89 inches). My goal is to create as much storage space as possible while considering the sloped ceiling. I am thinking about whether a combination of open shelves at the bottom and closed doors at the top would be worthwhile, especially due to the limited height.

What do you think?

Which material and screws did you use for the brackets? My wall is made of a mix of drywall and timber stud framing.

For drywall with timber stud framing, I usually use 6x80 mm (1/4 x 3 1/8 inch) chipboard screws together with Fischer drywall anchors. It’s important that you always screw into the timber studs because the drywall alone cannot support any load.

I use brackets made of galvanized steel, at least 2 mm (5/64 inch) thick, so they are really sturdy.

Did you make the panel yourself or buy it in stores?

Multiplex panels are often available in hardware stores in standard sizes and can be cut to measure. I usually cut them myself to fit the exact slope. A small tip: protect the edges with edge banding to prevent the panel from swelling.

For installation on pitched ceilings:
– Measure and adjust all frame parts precisely before assembly.
– Replace the back panel with suitable boards or omit it entirely if stability is ensured by other means.
– Attach only to load-bearing points, preferably wooden studs.
– Adjust or shorten doors if necessary.
– Sliding doors save space on sloped ceilings.

Ikea does not provide a specific manual for this, but from my experience, the general “know-how” approaches are sufficient.

If you can't find an official guide, follow these points:
- Measure accurately
- Adjust the frame
- Check stability
- Attach the cabinet with brackets
- Adjust or replace the back panel

This is sufficient for a secure installation under the slope.

I’m asking because I consider the stability of the cabinet without a back panel to be somewhat critical.

That is a valid concern. The back panel usually plays an important role in the stability of Ikea Pax wardrobes. For sloped ceilings, it is therefore advisable to use a rigid panel as the back, securely screwed in place and cut to fit the slope. Alternatively, diagonal bracing can be installed inside the cabinet frame to provide the necessary torsional rigidity.

When mounting the cabinet to the wall, make sure the fixings are positioned so that the unit cannot twist or become misaligned. This can easily happen with sloped ceilings.
