Hello everyone,
I am planning to install several Ikea Metod shelves on my walls, but I have different types of walls in my apartment: a solid brick wall, drywall panels on the ceiling, and a timber stud wall.
My question is: What types of fasteners and installation methods are best suited for securely and permanently fixing the Metod shelves to each of these wall types? Are there specific anchors or screws you would recommend for these kinds of walls?
It is important to me that the shelves can support heavy loads without the risk of falling. Also, any advice on the correct procedure for drilling or mounting would be helpful.
Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

For drywall:
- Use metal toggle anchors
- Minimum distance to the edge 30 mm (1.2 inches)
- Drill hole exactly matching the anchor
For brick: expansion anchors, 8 mm (0.3 inches) are suitable.
For timber stud walls: always screw directly into the studs with wood screws, no anchors required.

- Drywall panels: It is essential to use a special drywall anchor (e.g., cavity anchor or metal toggle anchor) for load distribution. Since the panels are thin, locating a supporting stud for direct fastening is the best solution.I wonder if this approach is sometimes a bit too strict. In my experience, well-sized cavity anchors can carry considerable loads, provided the shelf’s weight is distributed over multiple points.
Additionally, the load capacity of individual anchor types should be critically assessed, as manufacturers’ specifications often assume ideal conditions. It makes sense not to rely on a single fastening, but to distribute the load across several anchors, and when dealing with unusual wall constructions, always plan the fixings with conservative safety margins.
Anyone planning to use Metod shelves for heavy kitchen appliances or large storage should consider using additional reinforcements with drywall when necessary.
For all room types, the following applies:
- Check the wall before installation
- Choose anchors suitable for the wall
- Screws at least 6x60 mm (1/4 x 2 3/8 inches)
For drywall, it is better to screw into studs or use metal toggle anchors.
For brick walls, expansion anchors or chemical anchors are recommended.
For timber stud walls, screw directly into the wood; anchors are unnecessary.
