Hello everyone,

I am planning to install several Ikea Metod shelves on my walls, but I have different types of walls in my apartment: a solid brick wall, drywall panels on the ceiling, and a timber stud wall.

My question is: What types of fasteners and installation methods are best suited for securely and permanently fixing the Metod shelves to each of these wall types? Are there specific anchors or screws you would recommend for these kinds of walls?

It is important to me that the shelves can support heavy loads without the risk of falling. Also, any advice on the correct procedure for drilling or mounting would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello vin-pra10,

your question is reasonable and well structured. For the three wall types you mentioned, I recommend the following:

- Brick wall: Use high-quality universal anchors or expansion anchors specifically designed for brick walls. Concrete or toggle anchors also work well. Screws should be chosen to fit the anchor size.
- Drywall panels: Always use a special drywall anchor (such as hollow wall anchors or metal toggle anchors) to distribute the load. Since the panels are thin, locating a load-bearing stud for direct fastening is the best solution.
- Timber stud wall: It is best to screw directly into the timber studs, so first locate the studs using a stud finder or similar tool. Then use long screws that penetrate deeply into the studs.

When drilling, always select a drill bit that matches the anchor size. This helps prevent cracking or holes that are too large. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s specifications for the anchors, including their maximum load capacity.

For heavy shelves, I would always try to mount them on a load-bearing substructure in drywall, otherwise it can be problematic.

I agree with this. Additionally, when working with drywall, I recommend, if possible, reinforcing shelves with wooden battens or metal profiles underneath to better distribute the load and increase stability.

For brick walls, the general rule is to size anchors and screws according to the expected load. For heavy loads, such as Metod shelving units with many compartments, bolt anchors or chemical anchors are recommended if the wall is thick enough.

Regarding timber stud walls: the screw penetration depth is important. A minimum of 50 mm (2 inches) embedment in the wood provides good holding strength.

Hello everyone,

I would like to add some advice on the best way to install Metod shelves on different types of walls, each with specific requirements:

1. Drywall (plasterboard):
- First, use a stud finder to locate the studs.
- Attach the shelves directly to the wooden studs.
- If this is not possible, use cavity anchors or metal toggle bolts, making sure to observe the maximum load capacity of these anchors.

2. Brick wall:
- Drill with a masonry bit that matches the anchor.
- Use expansion anchors or chemical anchors for heavy loads.
- Screws should have an appropriate diameter and length, approximately 6 to 8 mm (0.24 to 0.31 inches) in diameter and at least 60 mm (2.4 inches) long.

3. Wood stud wall:
- Always try to screw directly into the wooden stud.
- Use wood screws with good threading (e.g., chipboard screws).
- Consider the load capacity and choose long screws to ensure a secure hold.

Drilling tip: Use a spirit level and marks on the shelf as needed to ensure straight installation. Mistakes when drilling are difficult to correct afterward.

Summary: The strength of the fastening is crucial because Metod shelves—especially when fully loaded—must withstand high stresses. Always match the wall type and mounting materials accordingly.

Thanks for the tip about the stud finder; I had already considered it but was unsure if it’s recommended when using Ikea Metod cabinets.

I’m particularly interested in how to best source the mounting hardware. Is there anything I should pay attention to regarding the quality or brand of anchors and screws?

Also, I read that with drywall (e.g., plasterboard), the length of the anchor and the distance from the edge are very important to avoid breakouts. Can someone provide exact measurements or guidelines I should follow when drilling to ensure stability is maintained?

Generally, it is advisable to choose branded products or at least high-quality items from specialized suppliers. Cheap anchors bought from supermarkets or general hardware stores may fail under heavy loads.

The rule of thumb for anchors is:
- Select the appropriate size for the wall type and load
- For drywall and hollow walls, use metal toggle anchors
- For brick walls, use plastic or metal expansion anchors sized 6–10 mm (0.24–0.4 inches)

Maintain an edge distance of at least 20–30 mm (0.8–1.2 inches) in drywall to prevent breakouts.

The drill hole depth and anchor length should be chosen so that the anchor is fully embedded in the wall, and the screw can be fully inserted without spinning or tilting.

If in doubt, contact the supplier; they often provide guidance on load capacities.
