Hello everyone, I would like to know how to securely attach IKEA Malm dressers to the wall to prevent them from tipping over. Specifically, I am interested in which mounting materials are recommended, whether different types of anchors and screws are needed depending on the wall type, and the best approach for walls made of drywall or brick. I want to consider all relevant safety aspects because I have small children at home. Is there anything else to keep in mind when placing the dresser on an uneven floor? Thank you very much for your informed advice!

Hello, to securely attach the Malm dresser to the wall, the type of wall is crucial. For solid walls (e.g., brick or concrete), high-quality anchors such as expansion anchors or chemical anchors combined with suitable screws are recommended. If the wall is made of drywall (plasterboard), special drywall anchors or cavity anchors that can handle tensile forces well are necessary.

It is also important to use the wall fasteners provided by IKEA or ones of similar quality, as these are usually tested and matched for the dresser. Before drilling, make sure to check for electrical cables or water pipes in the drilling area – for this, I recommend a detection device.

The dresser usually comes with brackets on the back panel that are attached to the wall. Screws and anchors should be chosen with sufficient length to ensure a deep and secure hold, especially for masonry walls.

Yes, definitely – the choice is decisive here! Please feel free to specify the exact wall type you have, so I can assist you more precisely.

I would like to add: When mounting on drywall, it is essential to pay close attention to the maximum load capacity of the anchors. Malm dressers are relatively heavy, especially when fully loaded and when children pull on them. It is worth using at least two attachment points at the top of the dresser to minimize the risk of tipping.

For brick walls, I prefer to use 8mm (about 5/16 inch) nylon expansion anchors along with matching screws that have a head designed to fit through the IKEA bracket. It is also crucial that the anchor holes in the dresser align precisely with those in the wall to distribute tension forces optimally.

Hello! I would like to add that it is also helpful to quickly level the dresser before attaching it and possibly place small shims under the feet if the floor is uneven. This not only prevents wobbling but also makes it easier to screw in the spacers or wall fasteners.

Often, just a thin piece of felt or a carefully adjusted wedge is enough to ensure the dresser stands flat. This can reduce potential stress on the fasteners.

Additionally, stability against tipping over is primarily ensured by the wall mounting. The screws under the feet are less relevant for this.

I completely understand why this is important to you, especially with small children! The Malm series is very stylish, but unfortunately, as I’ve heard, it can be prone to tipping. I have installed similar safety screws in our home, which I recommend for every child’s bedroom.

That’s absolutely true – it always makes me a bit nervous too, but it’s better to check one more time than to risk an electric shock. Do you feel the same? Have you ever had any experience with cable detectors?

Safety is the most important thing to me here, and sometimes I prefer to call in a professional when I’m unsure.

For secure wall mounting of the Malm dresser, I recommend the following, strictly based on building physics and safety:

1. Check the wall type: concrete, brick, or drywall – this determines the type of anchors.
2. Use metal expansion anchors or heavy-duty anchors for solid walls.
3. For cavity walls, use high load drywall anchors or cavity anchors.
4. Align drill holes precisely with the dresser’s mounting points.
5. Screws should penetrate at least 70 mm (2.75 inches) into the wall.
6. Level the dresser at floor level using leveling wedges to prevent tipping due to uneven floors.

The mounting hardware provided by IKEA is recommended but can be replaced with higher quality parts if needed. If unsure, consult a structural engineer or a professional installation company.
