Hello everyone, I am planning to properly install the Ikea Metod plinth boards in my new kitchen. I want to use a simple yet permanently stable method that can withstand stresses such as vacuuming or occasional bumps without giving way. The plinths should be flush with the floor and fixed as invisibly as possible. Does anyone have experience with which fastening method has proven effective? I am especially interested in the differences between screws, clips, or adhesive methods for the Ikea Metod plinth boards, as well as any tips on how to install them to ensure both good appearance and durability. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

For Ikea Metod baseboards, I generally recommend using the original mounting clips provided by Ikea. These can be easily attached to the underside of the baseboards and then hooked onto the kitchen cabinet front. Advantage: No visible screws on the outside, good stability, and quick removal possible.

Alternatively, special metal mounting brackets can be considered, which, when combined with screws, guarantee an even firmer connection—especially useful on uneven floors. Relying solely on adhesive is rather problematic in the kitchen area, as moisture or cleaning agents can affect the adhesion.

A clean preparation is important: The feet of the base cabinets must be stable and level so that the clip mounting is not under tension and the baseboards do not rattle or come loose later. Precise alignment before fastening is also crucial.

I would like to add a simple step-by-step approach to the points already mentioned that has proven effective for me:

- First, cut the baseboards and lay them out dry to check the measurements and fit.
- Evenly attach the appropriate clips along the baseboard at the recommended spacing (approximately every 30-40 cm (12-16 inches)).
- Then hang the baseboards onto the clips at the base and check that everything fits snugly and without play.
- If necessary, use small shims to compensate for uneven areas at the base.
- Perform a final alignment check before the permanent fixing.

I have had no issues with this method for years. I would advise against simply gluing baseboards, as adhesion to tiles or smooth floors is often not durable. Based on your question, this combination is suitable because it is straightforward to do and holds securely over time.

Interesting thread. I’m wondering whether using the original Ikea clips really is the most secure solution.

I agree, but why aren’t screws preferred then? Especially for baseboards, which technically don’t remain visible, a concealed screw fixing would be possible. Are there any disadvantages, such as difficulty when retrofitting or damage to the cabinet carcass?

Are there users who have tried both methods and can specifically describe how durable they are and how easy they are to install in everyday use? This would influence my decision, as the kitchen will be heavily used.

Regarding screw fastening and durability, I can share the following from experience:

- Hidden screws are definitely the most durable option. You drill holes from underneath into the brackets or directly into the strips, which are then screwed onto the base units.
- The downside is the increased effort and the risk of drilling too far into the base cabinets or creating visible holes in the baseboards if the work is not done carefully.
- Clips are simpler and allow for faster installation, but they are somewhat more flexible and may give slightly under very strong impacts.

A balanced approach: use clips for easy assembly, combined if needed with one or two hidden screws at critical points.

This way, you achieve a good balance of appearance, usability, and stability.

I always use the Ikea clips; this ensures a long-lasting hold and a clean appearance. I only use screws if the floor is very uneven or the baseboards are loose.
