Hello everyone!

I am currently planning to fit my kitchen cabinets with Ikea Metod doors and want to ensure that the doors are durable and easy to operate over time. The standard Ikea hinges are already good, but I’m unsure if there are any specific tips or instructions regarding installation or adjustment that should be followed, especially to maintain long-term functionality and smooth operation even after years.

I would appreciate if you could share your experiences on how exactly you installed the Metod doors, what screws or tools you used, if you added any extra parts, and how you adjusted the doors to prevent them from sagging or becoming difficult to open after frequent use.

In short: How do I install Ikea Metod doors for long-lasting durability and easy handling, in a concise and practical way? Thanks in advance!

Thank you all for your many helpful responses! The advice about careful screw tightening and the suggestion to use lubricant have been especially valuable to me.

I have one more specific question:
Does anyone know of a recommended low-friction lubricant that works well with both wood and plastic hinge components without leaving residue? Also, how do you usually perform adjustments—do you use special tools or rely on experience to determine how much to turn the screws?

Additionally, I’m curious whether there are significant differences among the soft-close hinges offered by Ikea, or if compatible third-party products can be used without any drawbacks.

I’m really looking forward to your insights and experiences!

Regarding lubricants: I prefer using silicone spray or silicone oil for furniture fittings. It is odorless, does not soak in, and does not leave greasy residues that attract dirt. It is important to spray sparingly and wipe off any excess oil with a cloth.

And how exactly do you make the readjustments? Do you use special tools or rely on experience about how much to turn the screws?

For the readjustment, a good Phillips screwdriver is usually sufficient. Turn the screws in small increments (e.g., quarter turns) and check how the door behaves in between. This way, you can usually find the correct setting quickly without over-tightening.

Regarding soft-close hinges: The ones from Ikea are solid and well matched to the Metod system. Third-party suppliers often offer cheaper alternatives, but their quality can vary greatly. If you value durability, I would stick with Ikea, as their hinges fit precisely and the Ikea warranty then applies.
