Hello everyone, I am planning to install the kickboards on my new Ikea Metod kitchen. I want to achieve both a clean appearance and long-lasting stability. The kickboard should not only hold securely but also be easy to remove later if repairs or cleaning are needed. Are there any practical methods or tools you would recommend? I have read that some use clips, while others use screws, but I am unsure how exactly this works and what is best suited to ensure both a firm hold and a neat installation. Your experience and tips would be very helpful.

Thanks a lot for the detailed tips, especially the advice on the spacing of the clips and the miter cuts, which are really helpful. How about disassembly? I’ve read that the Metod baseboards with clips can be removed quite easily, but I’m not sure how to do it carefully without damaging the clips or the baseboard.

Does anyone have a proven method for cleanly removing the baseboards, for example, to clean underneath or to work on them again later?

That’s a really good question because I didn’t get it perfect right away either. What helped me was gently prying up the baseboard carefully at one corner using my fingers or a flat plastic pry tool. It’s important not to use sharp objects or metal spatulas, as they can damage the finish or the material.

If something is stuck, be patient and try small back-and-forth movements to loosen it. The clips are quite sturdy, but they don’t like too much force. It’s a bit harder to remove at first, but after a few times it gets easier.

I hope this gives you a bit more confidence for the disassembly. Be patient, you can do it!

Metod baseboards are usually attached using special clips that are screwed into the floor cabinet.

That is correct. Additionally, the clips are designed to create a snap-in connection with the baseboard, which makes installation and removal easier. The baseboard holds securely but can be removed without tools if the clip connection is released.

For uneven surfaces, a small double-sided tape between the baseboard and floor can help as a supplement

This measure is only useful if the unevenness is minimal. Larger damage or deformations in the subfloor should definitely be repaired beforehand to prevent stress and later damage to the baseboards.

My tip: Metod baseboards are optimized for simple yet sturdy attachment – avoid unnecessary modifications if the clips fit properly.

You can attach the clips to the base cabinets in advance, preferably at load-bearing points and not too close to the cabinet edges.

Exactly, otherwise the clips will break more easily. For this reason, I always attached the clips at least 5cm (2 inches) away from the edges.

The trim is securely attached but can be removed without tools if needed.

That is only partially true. Depending on the age of the clips and trim, a flat plastic pry tool can sometimes be helpful to release the trim. It’s important to be careful to avoid breaking the fasteners.

I also recommend, if possible, testing the clips in their positions before fully screwing them in, so they can be removed more easily later.

For a permanently stable installation, I would like to add a practical recommendation:

- Use original Ikea clips, as they are compatible and fit precisely.
- If your kitchen is on an uneven floor, try to level it first using washers or wooden shims under the base cabinet feet.
- Screw the clips in firmly but carefully to avoid over-tightening.
- During assembly, make sure to have clean miter cuts and flush joints at the corners.
- For a neater appearance, you can seal the baseboards on the underside, where they meet the wall, with a thin layer of mounting foam or acrylic to cover small gaps.

Overall, the biggest mistake is installing the clips crookedly or too close to the edge. This affects both the appearance and the stability.
