Hello everyone, I recently bought several KALLAX units from IKEA and wanted to place them freely in the room, not fixed to the wall. However, I noticed that especially larger combinations tend to be a bit wobbly and don’t have the desired stability. My question is: How can large KALLAX units, standing freely, be made more stable without screwing them to the wall? Are there practical tips or accessories that can be used to improve their stability? I’m looking forward to your experiences and ideas!

Has anyone had experience using weights in the lower section? That is a very useful tip. You can try using heavy books or stone tiles to lower the center of gravity. It is really important that the weights are evenly distributed and that the base area is large enough.

Maybe you can also use several connection points: brackets, fittings, and then additionally the weights at the bottomThat sounds like a great combination – basically the stability burger method with three layers! 🙂
By the way, a fully loaded KALLAX with books will already look much more stable than if it’s just empty inside.
Thanks for all the input so far. To summarize: The safest freestanding solution seems to be a combination of internally connecting several modules, securing them with brackets or connecting kits, and supporting them with weights at the bottom.
I like the idea of joining the modules using the original or compatible fasteners to create larger units that stand more securely.
Do you have any practical tips regarding the floor surface? My flooring is parquet, so I want to avoid any unattractive scratches.

My floor is hardwood, so I want to avoid any unsightly scratches. In that case, you should definitely use felt furniture pads. They are inexpensive and protect the floor very well. Additionally, they slightly increase friction, which helps reduce slipping. It is also advisable to ensure that the KALLAX feet rest completely flat to prevent any levering effect.
After trying out several approaches, I wanted to share a quick update: I installed brackets on the inside, connected the modules together, and placed some heavy books in the lower compartments. I also glued felt pads under the feet to protect the parquet flooring.
Result: The stability has improved significantly, the furniture hardly wobbles anymore, and feels secure. Many thanks to everyone for the helpful tips!
