Hello everyone, I recently got a Kallax shelf from Ikea, and in everyday use, I’m increasingly bothered by small crumbs and dust buildup inside the compartments. The thing is, you usually can’t easily remove the shelf, and fully emptying and moving it isn’t an option for me since it’s fixed to the wall and loaded with many items.

My question to you is: How do you clean your Kallax compartments effectively and thoroughly without having to take the shelf apart or empty it completely? What tricks or tools do you use to reach stuck crumbs or dust inside the compartments with minimal effort? Are there any special cleaning methods or devices that have proven particularly useful?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips to solve this issue as simply and sustainably as possible.

I usually use a handheld vacuum with a narrow nozzle because it works well for getting into corners. If you don’t have one, a soft brush or a microfiber cloth will also do.

Hello Linus, I can understand your situation well. Unfortunately, KALLAX shelves do not have removable backs, which makes cleaning more difficult. My tip would be to first thoroughly vacuum the area to remove dust, then use a slightly damp cloth (not too wet) with a mild cleaner, and immediately follow up by wiping with a dry cloth. For stubborn crumbs or dust in small crevices, a fine brush or an old toothbrush can be very helpful.

Additionally, I occasionally use compressed air sprays or air dusters to blow dust out of corners without having to dismantle the shelf. This is especially effective if you don’t want to empty the furniture.

That sounds really frustrating—crumbs in compartments that are hard to reach... I used to have the same issue. What helped me was pulling an old sock over my hand and using a little glass cleaner to wipe the corners.

It also helps to occasionally go over it with a small handheld brush, so the crumbs don’t accumulate too much. I know it’s not always easy, but this way you can keep on top of it a bit and it won’t become a big problem.

For efficient cleaning of KALLAX compartments without disassembly, I recommend the following method: Use a handheld vacuum cleaner with a narrow crevice tool to remove crumbs and dust. Afterwards, a slightly damp microfiber cloth can be used to loosen any remaining dirt.

Another effective option is to use compressed air from office supplies or a compressor — this helps blow particles out of hard-to-reach corners. At the same time, it is advisable to reduce the dust-collecting effect of decorations or shelves to minimize the issue over the long term.

I can easily understand how annoying it is when crumbs keep settling in a favorite shelf, causing you to stumble over them repeatedly.

For me, it’s important not to be too hard on myself and to be patient when cleaning. With small compartments like these, it has really helped to establish regular cleaning routines, such as briefly vacuuming once a week and then wiping down with a damp cloth. The small effort pays off later because dirt doesn’t build up as much.
