Hello everyone,

I am currently focusing on the care and maintenance of Ikea Pax wardrobes in daily use. Since these wardrobes are very popular due to their modular system and mostly lacquered or foil-covered surfaces, I am wondering which cleaning and care methods have proven effective to preserve their appearance and functionality in the long term.

I am particularly interested in tips regarding cleaning, how to avoid or treat scratches, which products can be used without damaging the surface, and the best way to maintain the hinges and sliding door tracks.

How do you take care of your Pax wardrobes in everyday use? Are there any specific cleaners or care products suitable for the often white surfaces? And how do you handle minor damages that are unavoidable in daily life?

Looking forward to your experiences and helpful advice!

Hello mason1,

First of all, thank you very much for your detailed question. Maintaining an Ikea Pax wardrobe can be divided into three main areas: surface cleaning, scratch protection, and mechanical maintenance.

- Cleaning: For painted or laminated surfaces, I recommend using a damp microfiber cloth with a bit of mild dish soap to gently remove grease and dirt. Important: Avoid aggressive cleaners with solvents or abrasives, as they can cause the surface to become dull or spotty.

- Avoiding scratches: Avoid using the wardrobe as a surface to place objects with sharp edges. For minor scratches, touching up with a color-matched furniture marker or even a special repair wax that can be carefully applied often helps.

- Maintenance of hinges and tracks: The sliding doors and moving parts occasionally need lubrication. Silicone spray is suitable for this because it does not stick and does not attract dust. In my Pax system, I apply it about twice a year, especially when squeaking occurs or the doors become stiff.

Summary:
- Regular wiping with a mild cleaner
- Targeted scratch repair
- Care of mechanical parts with silicone spray

Question: Do you use sliding doors or hinged doors on your Pax? Depending on the door type, maintenance may vary slightly.

That’s the classic approach, of course, but honestly – haven’t we all experienced that even average care often leads to discoloration or peeling, especially on dark edges? I think Ikea does offer good wardrobes, but sometimes the materials are incredibly delicate and hardly practical for everyday use. Laminated surfaces in particular always feel like a ticking time bomb when it comes to moisture or stains from alcohol or coffee.

I really wonder when a manufacturer will manage to build PAX-like systems that are sturdy and less prone to damage, without us constantly having to walk around spraying the doors with silicone spray. Maintenance is definitely important, but sometimes the design of these wardrobes seems to invite constant tinkering.

So, I’d like to add to my opinion:
- better avoid overly aggressive cleaners
- but also avoid excessive maintenance with products that unnecessarily harm or weigh down the surface
- and if possible, accept real signs of use instead of trying to keep everything perfect

What are your thoughts?

Hello everyone,

Having gained several years of experience with Ikea Pax wardrobes, I would like to add that everyday maintenance can be quite systematic if certain technical procedures are followed.

First, a brief overview of surface care:
- For the white laminated surfaces, cleaning with a pH-neutral glass cleaner or mild soapy water is recommended. Moisture should be kept to a minimum, as excessive wetness can cause the laminate to swell.
- For painted doors, special furniture polish can be omitted, as it does not improve the paint layer and at best leaves an undesirable sheen.

Next is the maintenance of hinges and sliding rails:
- It is important to thoroughly clean dust and dirt residues with a small brush or compressed air before applying lubricant.
- For sliding doors, I recommend high-quality, non-greasy lubricants such as Teflon spray, as these keep the guide rails running smoothly over the long term.

When it comes to small scratches:
- Heat-treated repair kits have proven effective for laminated surfaces, as heat slightly melts the laminate and visually reduces the damage.
- Painted surfaces can be touched up using color-matched retouching pens.

Finally, a question for you, mason1: What type of doors did you install, and how heavily used are your wardrobes? This can also influence the recommended care.

I hope these details help you further.

I can understand that well, because I also had a Pax wardrobe for many years, and in everyday family life, such a piece of furniture is used rather than polished. Sometimes it’s difficult to keep everything spotless while managing work and children.

So instead of constantly being upset about every scratch, I’ve learned to be more relaxed about minor imperfections. They also tell the story of a lived-in home.

Of course, everything in moderation. It’s enough to dust regularly and gently wipe off stains. Recently, I only repaired small scratches if they were really disturbing.

Certainly, maintenance also has an emotional aspect because we want our living environment to be pleasant – but sometimes less is more to avoid putting pressure on ourselves. What do you think?
