Hello everyone, I would like to know the best ways to combine the IKEA Hemnes furniture—especially Hemnes dressers or beds—with fabrics to create a harmonious and cozy look. I’m particularly interested in options regarding fabric types, colors, and textures that complement the classic, somewhat rustic wooden appearance of Hemnes. It would also be great if you have tips on how to incorporate fabrics, for example as throws, upholstery, or curtains, in a way that doesn’t look too busy. Thanks in advance for your ideas and experiences!

Contrasts work well when used deliberately—for example, dark cushions on light Hemnes wood. However, too many patterns can ruin the simple style. It's better to choose subtle patterns, minimalist designs, or tone-on-tone.

Regarding patterns: Hemnes is more minimalist and rustic, so subtle patterns work better than large, bold designs. Floral patterns can work if they are understated and have a vintage feel. Geometric patterns are acceptable if kept simple—such as stripes or small diamonds in calm colors. Strong color contrasts like dark blue or anthracite look elegant but should be used sparingly to maintain harmony.

Interesting, that makes sense to me because I would exactly associate that slightly nostalgic impression with a Hemnes piece of furniture.

How else could contrasts be practically implemented, for example with curtains or upholstery? Does anyone have experience with fabric covers specifically for Hemnes beds or dressers?

A really great question! 😎 Contrasts work especially well with seat cushions or padded covers, particularly on Hemnes chairs or benches. If you have curtains in darker blue or anthracite, you can definitely place a few cushions in similar shades on dressers or use a throw that picks up the tone. This creates a nice flow in the room and looks really appealing. The only important thing is to avoid mixing too many different patterns, as that can quickly become chaotic.

And a little tip: use fabrics that feel soft, such as velvet for accents, which adds coziness with ease.

If anyone is considering upholstering chairs or benches with fabric, be sure to choose durable upholstery materials that can withstand wear and tear. Hemnes is sturdy, so the fabric should be just as strong.
