Hello everyone, I am planning to organize my craft materials systematically in the Ikea Besta cabinet but am having trouble structuring the existing modules optimally. My main concern is how to store different materials like paper, fabrics, tools, and small parts separately yet clearly, so that the storage space is used efficiently and everything can be found quickly. Does anyone have experience with the BESTA system in this context? Which inserts, boxes, or organizing aids fit particularly well inside, especially when considering clear labeling? I am also interested in tips that go beyond standard solutions, such as DIY elements or clever modifications within the existing BESTA dimensions.

Hi, I would recommend using drawer inserts to separate small items. For larger materials like paper or fabric, flat boxes that can be stacked are suitable. Labeling helps you quickly find what you are looking for.

I have used various storage boxes within the BESTA system myself to keep craft materials neatly separated, for example, transparent plastic boxes of different sizes. Particularly practical are also pull-out drawer inserts that you can customize individually. It is important to create fixed categories, such as "glue sticks & adhesives," "paper & cardboard," "tools," or "fabric scraps." This way, you avoid clutter and maintain a clear structure.

That is basically true, but I find that stacking can reduce visibility. Especially if you access the materials frequently, deeper drawers with separate compartments are easier to organize.

I would add here that flexible dividers are useful to adjust the compartments as needed, especially when the volume of materials changes.

How is your crafting material actually distributed? More sheet materials or many small parts? That could make a big difference in how you organize it.

That’s a good question! Actually, my craft materials are mixed: I have a lot of paper in A4 and A5 sizes, some larger pieces of fabric, as well as various small decorative elements, beads, small parts, tools like scissors and rulers, and of course glue and paints. The goal is to keep everything easily accessible and prevent the smaller items from falling into large boxes where I would have to search for a long time.

What I’m also considering is the option to equip the BESTA shelf with doors or sliding doors to keep the storage visually neat and to avoid dust. Is this a good idea for craft boxes like these, or does it make quick access more difficult?

I’m a fan of doors because it makes everything look much tidier and keeps dust out. Of course, open compartments are more practical for crafting on the go, but once you get used to it, you quickly realize that having a bit of a "cool factor" with doors works well. 😎

Otherwise, I would recommend a mix: open compartments for tools and frequently used materials, and behind doors, larger boxes for less frequently used items. For something like the BESTA, you could use transparent storage boxes with handles, so you always have a clear view of the contents.

And if you’re into DIY: pull-out wooden drawers with plexiglass fronts look great, help prevent clutter, and let you see exactly what’s inside!
