adon50Some time ago, I started a large collection of collectibles, mainly consisting of figures, cards, and small decorative items. Now I want to use a storage system that is as flexible and reliable as possible for both storing and displaying them. I came across the Ikea Pax system, which seems interesting to me because of its modular design and the variety of interior fittings available. My question is: How can I make the best use of Ikea Pax for storing collectibles? I am especially interested in tips for practical compartment division, suitable shelves or inserts that protect the items while keeping them visible, as well as organizational ideas that make it easy to find things and still allow room for future expansion. Does anyone have practical experience with the Pax system for collectors, perhaps even specific recommendations for accessories or modifications that work particularly well? I look forward to suggestions and sharing experiences!
To use the Ikea Pax system efficiently for storing collectibles, I recommend the following approach:
- First, adjust the interior layout of the Pax units according to the size of the items. Shallower shelves or drawers with dividers are suitable for small figurines and cards.
- Plexiglass or acrylic boxes can help keep delicate items dust-free and visible. These boxes can be placed on the shelves.
- For display purposes, using glass doors is useful as they protect from dust without obstructing visibility.
- Adjustable shelves are also practical to adapt the compartments flexibly to changing collections.
- For very small or fragile items, I recommend drawer inserts with padding.
- Lighting options inside the cabinet enhance visibility and highlight the objects.
It is also advisable to choose the Pax depth (35 or 58 cm [14 or 23 inches]) according to the collection. The deeper version suits larger collectibles, while the narrower one works well for cards and smaller items. Accessories are available from Ikea and third-party suppliers, where additional inserts can be found. Overall, the Pax system is very flexible and works well if you plan the interior layout individually.

I have quite an extensive collecting hobby myself and often face the challenge of balancing space, visibility, and protection. It helps me a lot to divide the different types of collections—such as figures, cards, and accessories—into separate cabinet compartments.
It is also important not to be too rigid about it. Collections grow over time, and the Pax system allows you to adjust shelves or add drawers and inserts whenever needed. I particularly appreciate the ability to move shelves in 2-cm (1 inch) increments, which is a great advantage for adapting the system to new requirements.
Has anyone ever considered adding small LED lighting? I think it really highlights the collectibles well, but it only makes full sense if the doors are made of glass.

I’m especially interested in tips for sensible compartment subdivision, suitable shelves or inserts that protect items while keeping them clearly visibleMaybe a combination of open and closed compartments is worth considering. Some pieces you want to display, others you’d rather store more securely.
From personal experience, I can say that the Pax system is truly a dream for collectors! 😄
I’ve stored my collection of action figures in it, and thanks to the many options, it’s absolutely brilliant:
- Clear glass doors keep the figures visible at all times.
- Adjustable shelves are great for accommodating larger items!
- I attached LED strips inside the compartments, which really make the collection shine! 🔥
- When space is tight, I got stackable boxes that fit perfectly on the shelves and offer excellent dust protection.
- I also have a few drawers with padded inserts for delicate cards and miniatures.
What I especially like is that you can keep adding pieces and reconfigure it, so it can “grow” with your collection!
So, anyone with a large and diverse collection should definitely consider the Pax system – highly recommended!!!

Maybe a combination of open and closed compartments could also be worth considering. To protect against dust while keeping the items visible, I also lean towards glass doors, but optionally I close off some compartments with solid doors to store less attractive yet important objects dust-tight.
How do you handle organization? I often struggle to keep track once everything gets mixed up. Do you use sorting systems or labeling? What solutions have proven effective for you, especially when storing larger quantities of small collectibles?
One more detailed question: How sturdy are the shelves? Some of my figures are quite heavy. Can the PAX shelves support that over time, or would it be advisable to reinforce them?
