Hello everyone, I am considering using my IKEA Besta shelving unit as a DIY workbench and would like to hear your opinions and experiences. Specifically, I am interested in how to improve its stability, which materials are suitable for a work surface, and whether the Besta system is even appropriate for more heavy-duty workshop tasks or if it is too fragile for that. I am also looking for tips on how to optimally combine storage and workspace without having to buy expensive workbenches. Looking forward to constructive feedback!

I also attach the panel directly. You need to be careful to avoid damaging the surface. Take care when pre-drilling to prevent the screws from tearing out or splitting.

You are giving me really great ideas. One more question: Does anyone have experience with fitting the Besta system with casters to make the workbench mobile? I imagine moving it mainly when larger projects are underway.

Casters can be installed, but only those with a high load capacity and a locking brake. Otherwise, it becomes unstable and unsafe during work.

Exactly. If casters are used, they should definitely be adjustable with locks, and the base must be reinforced to prevent any wobbling.

I once had a Besta with casters – super practical! Just attach four heavy-duty casters, add brakes, and you're done. This way, you stay flexible but still have a solid hold when you lock the workbench in place for working. Absolutely recommend it 🙂

Thanks to everyone! Here is my summary: stability achieved through screwing the modules together, worktop made of 18-21 mm (0.7-0.8 inch) multiplex plywood, optional locking casters, and wall mounting as an additional option. With this setup, the Besta should work well as a workbench. I will report back on how it goes!
