Hello everyone, I am considering using my IKEA Besta shelving unit as a DIY workbench and would like to hear your opinions and experiences. Specifically, I am interested in how to improve its stability, which materials are suitable for a work surface, and whether the Besta system is even appropriate for more heavy-duty workshop tasks or if it is too fragile for that. I am also looking for tips on how to optimally combine storage and workspace without having to buy expensive workbenches. Looking forward to constructive feedback!

Wall mounting is a good idea. Use appropriate anchors for your wall type and secure the shelves not only to the back wall but also underneath the countertop for added stability.

Topic: Worktop thickness. How thick should the worktop be at a minimum if I want to attach it to the Besta, so that it can withstand a vise or occasional hammer blows? I was thinking of plywood with at least 18mm (0.7 inches), but I’m unsure.

18mm (0.7 inches) plywood is a good compromise. If you want more stability, choose 21mm (0.8 inches). For extra protection, you can reinforce the underside with cross battens.

Multiplex 18 mm (0.7 inches) is sufficient for many tasks. For heavier loads, you can glue a solid top layer made of beech wood or a similar material.

Thanks, that roughly matches my thinking. How do you attach the board? Pre-drilling and using brackets, or screwing it directly onto the carcasses? I want to minimize the risk of the board being loose.

I screw the countertop directly through the top edges of the Besta carcasses. Pre-drilling is advisable. Using screws that are not too long helps prevent damage. Alternatively, you can reinforce it from below with brackets.
