Hello everyone,

I recently bought several Billy shelves and want to set them up in my home office. Unfortunately, the floor in that room is quite uneven – there are slight waves and minor height differences, so the shelves don’t stand very stable and tend to wobble.

My question to you: How can I stabilize Billy shelves when the floor is uneven? Are there proven methods or materials to improve their stability without damaging the shelves themselves? I’m looking for simple and practical solutions that will last in the long term, as I use the shelves for books and work materials.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Interesting question, Lireon.

First of all: How uneven is the floor actually? Small irregularities of a few millimeters can often be adjusted with felt pads or small shims. However, with larger spacers or wobbly shelves, the question arises why the floor isn’t repaired in the first place.

Regarding this point: It would be useful to know if you can securely fasten the shelves to the wall – this is often the most stable solution. If you are looking for an alternative, I would recommend wooden or plastic shims to place under the feet, possibly with a rubber pad for slip resistance. But truly without any damage to the shelves? That becomes tricky.

Hello Lireon,

there are several ways to stabilize your Billy shelves on uneven floors:

1. Furniture shims: These come in wood, plastic, or rubber and can be placed under the individual feet to compensate for unevenness. Combined versions with non-slip features work especially well.

2. Adjustable furniture feet: You can purchase original or similar replacement feet that are height-adjustable (screw feet), allowing you to level the shelf precisely.

3. Securing the shelf to the wall: This is the most stable option, especially if there is a risk of the shelf tipping. IKEA offers suitable safety kits.

4. Using a wooden board or MDF panel as a base: If the floor is very uneven, a sturdy, flat board can provide a significant improvement as a platform for the shelf.

If you want to avoid damaging the shelf, I would advise against adhesive tapes or similar solutions, as they are difficult to remove without leaving residues. Often, furniture shims offer the best balance between effectiveness and care. Good luck!

Hello,

I always use adjustable furniture glides on uneven floors. You can retrofit them and then easily adjust as needed. It is important that the shelf is also secured to the wall.

Alternatively, small wooden wedges are an option, which you can find at hardware stores.

Hello from the north! 😊

I simply attached screw-in furniture legs from the hardware store to my Billy shelves. These can be individually adjusted in height, allowing you to perfectly compensate for small unevenness in the floor.

I can only confirm that this quickly eliminates any wobbling. Add wall brackets, and your Billy will stand completely stable. 😉

Just to add: If you plan to move the shelves again at some point, adjustable screw feet are also useful because you can fine-tune them anytime.

That gets rid of wobbling in no time.

That’s true, but you should make sure the feet have a sufficiently large bearing surface; otherwise, they might damage the shelf under load. This is a minor weakness with IKEA Billy shelves.
