Good morning everyone,
I am currently looking into choosing BILLY shelves for my home project and have come across an important topic that I would like to discuss with you: Which BILLY shelves from IKEA are actually strong enough to hold heavier loads, such as thick books or large binders?
I am particularly interested in the maximum load capacity per shelf as well as the differences between the various versions (material, size, design). Some say that the basic particleboard versions tend to sag quickly, while others report better load capacities with the more robust models.
Does anyone have experience or reliable technical information on which BILLY models are truly stable? I want to make an informed decision and not choose based on appearance alone.
Thank you for your help!

Hello benreo,
Unfortunately, IKEA does not provide very detailed technical datasheets, but on their website in the product descriptions, you can usually find the maximum load per shelf in kilograms.
You can also contact customer service directly; they often have up-to-date PDFs or information about materials and load capacities available.
For special variants, such as the glass shelves in the Billy series, the load capacity is usually explicitly stated again in the product details or on the packaging.
If you can shop in-store, it’s worth checking the assembly instructions or the datasheet that comes with the shelving unit – these regularly specify the maximum load per shelf.

One last detail: Are the feet or shelves of BILLY individually replaceable in case a shelf breaks through or gets damaged?
I have read that for some shelving units, only entire shelf sections can be replaced, which is obviously more expensive.
It is important for me to remain as flexible as possible, especially since I use the shelf a lot.
Good morning,
I would like to summarize the discussion:
- Standard BILLY shelves have a load capacity of about 30 kg per shelf
- Wall mounting significantly increases stability and allows about 40 kg per shelf
- Models with glass doors or reinforced shelves are more stable
- Shelves with thinner back panels (e.g., Oxberg) should be loaded more cautiously
- Shelves can be easily purchased and replaced if needed
Thank you all for the valuable information! If anyone has further details or tips, please feel free to share 🙂
