Hello everyone,

I have IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with fronts that I would like to replace quickly and cost-effectively. Since I don’t want to buy completely new cabinet boxes nor hire expensive professionals, I am looking for tips and tricks on how to change the fronts as fast and cheaply as possible. It would also be important to know if there’s anything I should watch out for during installation, especially regarding drawers and doors that are equipped with special hinges or slides.

Has anyone here had experience with quickly replacing Metod fronts and can offer advice on the best way to go about it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks already for the tips!

@Tevin: You mentioned that it can be cheaper to use second-hand fronts. From your experience or others’, are there usually any issues with condition or fit?

I’m asking because I actually want new fronts but am looking to save some money.

Also: Are the hinges with clips on IKEA Metod fronts all standardized, or are there differences to be aware of to ensure a smooth replacement?

Second-hand fronts may sometimes show minor signs of wear or slight color variations, which may or may not be an issue depending on your expectations. The fit is usually good if they are original IKEA fronts. However, with third-party manufacturers, you need to pay close attention to the measurements.

The hinges on IKEA Metod fronts are mostly standardized, but there are different types (e.g., soft-close, push-open). Reusing your existing hinges is the safest option. Newly purchased fronts without hinges sometimes may not fit perfectly.

I recommend reusing the existing hinges whenever possible, as this saves time and helps avoid installation issues.

One quick tip: To remove the hinges, it's best to use a cordless screwdriver with the appropriate bit, which saves a lot of time.

After that, simply take off the fronts and attach the new ones directly. Often, everything fits very precisely, so no major readjustment is usually necessary.

Another tip: Lay the new fronts on the floor before installation and test the hinge positioning to save time during assembly.

This is a very good point that I can only emphasize! This way, you can immediately tell if the drillings are 100% accurate. It saves a lot of frustration during installation later on.
