ThermonHello everyone,
I have IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with fronts that I would like to replace quickly and cost-effectively. Since I don’t want to buy completely new cabinet boxes nor hire expensive professionals, I am looking for tips and tricks on how to change the fronts as fast and cheaply as possible. It would also be important to know if there’s anything I should watch out for during installation, especially regarding drawers and doors that are equipped with special hinges or slides.
Has anyone here had experience with quickly replacing Metod fronts and can offer advice on the best way to go about it? Thanks in advance for your help!

The fronts of IKEA Metod units can be easily removed using a hex key or a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screws on the hinges and trims, take off the front panel, then attach the new front and tighten the screws – done. It is important to use original or compatible replacements to ensure the hinges fit properly.
Hello Thermon,
I understand that you are looking for a quick and affordable solution. Replacing the IKEA Metod cabinet fronts is generally straightforward since the fronts are modular and attached with quick-mount hinges and clips.
A few important points about the process:
- First, take your time to remove each front by loosening the screws of the hinges on the cabinet carcass. Drawers usually have metal clips.
- Be sure to keep the hinges attached to the old fronts if your new fronts do not come with their own hinges.
- If you are buying fronts from a third-party manufacturer, check beforehand whether the drilling holes match exactly; otherwise, you may need to re-drill, which can be time-consuming.
- Another tip: lay the new fronts on the floor before installation and test hinge positioning to save time during assembly.
You can reduce costs by purchasing used or unused Metod fronts, for example from classifieds. This is often cheaper than buying new.
If you have any uncertainties, feel free to ask.

Wow, thanks for the detailed response, Tevin! 😊
I recently replaced similar Metod fronts myself and can say it’s really fun once you get the hang of it!
A little tip: take photos of your fronts and hinges beforehand – this helps a lot during reassembly!
Don’t get discouraged, it goes faster than you think, and you can save even more money by reusing some parts. Good luck!

An Addition Regarding Installation:
- Check if the hinges fit the new fronts. Some imitation fronts have different drilling patterns, which can quickly cause delays.
- If the drill holes do not match, templates can be used to accurately create new holes.
- Use screws that are not too long to avoid damaging the material of the fronts.
Regarding the time factor, removing the old fronts is the most time-consuming step. With steady hands and a clear system, 5–10 minutes per front is realistic.
You can save costs by:
- Reusing the hinges
- Purchasing cheaper reproductions, always checking quality
- Possibly improvising with clamp or magnetic solutions if you are flexible and do not want to fully attach the fronts.
