Hello everyone,

I have a problem with the doors of my Billy bookshelf squeaking when I open and close them. It’s quite annoying, especially since the bookshelf is in a relatively quiet room and the sound is really noticeable.

I suspect the issue is with the hinges or possibly the plastic components. I’ve done some research and it seems this problem is common with furniture like the BILLY.

So my question is: How can I effectively stop the doors of my BILLY bookshelf from squeaking without damaging the furniture or risking the warranty? Are there any proven home remedies or special products for treating the hinges?

I don’t have much experience with furniture repairs and don’t want to make any mistakes, so detailed tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello Ongosan,

“The squeaking in furniture doors like those on the BILLY shelf usually occurs because the hinges or moving parts rub against each other without enough lubrication.”

To fix this, I recommend the following steps:

1. Thoroughly clean the hinges from dust and any old lubricant.
2. Use a suitable lubricant, such as a silicone-based spray or a specialized furniture and door hinge oil. WD-40 can also help but should not be applied too often to wooden parts.
3. Open and close the doors several times to allow the lubricant to spread evenly.

Important: Avoid grease or oil that attracts dust, as this can make the problem worse.

Maybe you already have a lubricant on hand? If needed, I can also provide tips on how to apply it.

I think it’s important to differentiate here: not all hinges are automatically the sole cause.

Sometimes it can also be due to poor fitting if the shelf is warped or not set up completely level. In that case, parts rub against each other or additional stress is placed on the hinges, which increases the squeaking.

By the way: if the shelf is moved or the floor is uneven, this can make the effect even worse.

Checking the door alignment and readjusting the screws is therefore just as important as lubrication.

Otherwise, you might only be treating the symptoms without addressing the root cause.

Here is a brief guide on how I personally deal with squeaky BILLY doors:

1. Remove the door: BILLY usually uses door hinges that are easy to remove. Carefully lift the door and pull it upwards to take it off.

2. Cleaning: Use a dry cloth or a cotton swab to clean all moving parts, especially the metal components of the hinges.

3. Lubrication: I prefer a special, thin silicone spray. I spray it directly into the hinges (not too much, just a little). Silicone is good because it doesn’t become sticky or attract dust.

4. Reassembly: Put the door back in place and open and close it a few times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

5. Door adjustment: Also check if the door is properly aligned. On BILLY, you can easily adjust the hinge screws to prevent the door from sticking.

Common mistake: Using grease or oil that causes the hinges to become sticky. This eventually makes the squeaking worse.

I hope this helps! If you want, I can also explain the exact screw positions.

In addition to the previous tips, here are some technical details that might help:

The BILLY hinge mechanism is usually made of zinc die-cast or metal, combined with plastic parts. This combination can cause squeaking due to friction and insufficient lubrication.

Besides using an appropriate lubricant (such as silicone- or Teflon-based), preventive maintenance is important, as dust and dirt can accumulate between the parts and increase friction resistance.

If you use WD-40, apply it more as a cleaner before applying a more durable lubricant. WD-40 removes rust and dirt but does not replace proper lubrication.

I would also recommend securing the screws on the hinges with some threadlocker (for example, medium-strength threadlocker) to prevent them from loosening over time – this can also cause noises.

Question: How old is your BILLY shelf, and have you ever tightened or reinstalled any screws? This information could help with the analysis.

That’s a very good point, which I hadn’t considered before. I will definitely double-check whether the doors are properly aligned and not rubbing somewhere else.

Follow-up question: How old is your BILLY shelf unit, and have you ever tightened screws or adjusted it before?

The shelf unit is about 3 years old, and I have adjusted one door once to hang it slightly higher. But I haven’t done anything else since then.

Could it be that the adjustment, despite the correction, is still not perfect, causing tension in the hinge? And if so, how can I tell exactly? What should I do if that is the case?
