Hello everyone,
I am planning to repaint my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets because I find the standard surface too plain and would like to give them a more personal touch. My question is: What is the best way to repaint the Ikea Metod kitchen system afterward to achieve a durable and neat finish?
It is important to me that the surface does not peel or show brush marks later, and that the paint lasts a long time. I understand that the cabinets are mostly made of coated particleboard, and I have read that proper surface preparation and priming are crucial. However, I am missing a clear, structured procedure with recommendations for the best materials and techniques, such as sanding, priming, type of paint, and possibly sealing.
I am also interested in tips on removing the cabinet fronts before painting or whether it is better to completely disassemble the cabinets. Which tools and painting supplies have worked well for you?
I look forward to detailed experiences and recommendations, ideally step by step, so I can approach the project cleanly and successfully.

I’m a bit unsure if painting the Metod fronts is truly the best long-term solution.
That may be technically correct, but many underestimate how much stress the paint layers endure on moving parts like kitchen cabinet doors.
I also advise not to overlook the impact of environmental factors (humidity in the kitchen). It might be that a professional foil or plastic coating, or even replacing the fronts—although more expensive—is better in the long run.
Does anyone have long-term experience with painting Metod? Are there issues with peeling or cracking after some time?
That kind of information is more important to me than theoretical explanations.

A synthetic resin-based adhesion primer makes sense here, for example a 2K or acrylic primer

If properly sanded, primed, and coated with high-quality two-component paints, you can expect good results for several years, even with movement.
Minor hairline cracks or scratches can occur from pressure on the surface, especially on edges. However, sealing the surface with clear lacquer can make it more resistant.
The moisture aspect is important – typically, all painting should be done in well-ventilated areas after complete drying at normal humidity levels.
Conclusion: Using quality materials and careful technique will result in good appearance and durability. Alternative solutions like films are easier to apply but sometimes look cheaper and are less customizable.
If anyone has specific long-term experiences, it would be helpful to hear them as well.

I used my Metod for 4 years after painting it and didn’t have any significant problems! Sure, there was slight wear on the edges, but nothing bothersome. Maybe I was just careful with handling it. Important: Make sure to do proper surface preparation! 😉
And honestly: A project like this can be really fun and gives your kitchen a real upgrade. If you do a good job, the look will last a long time.
I would like to add that when painting Ikea Metod cabinets, a spray gun is not necessarily required – a high-quality foam roller or a fine paint sprayer can be sufficient if you want to avoid spray mist inside your home.
Also, painting work takes time and patience. It’s not a problem if a project isn’t finished in one day. Take your time for careful intermediate sanding and drying – it will pay off.
Regarding edges: sometimes it’s worth treating the edges first with a fine sanding pad, because sandpaper can be too abrasive and damage the veneer. Just to gently roughen the surface.
Good luck, and let us know how you progress!
