ᐅ How can I best organize Ikea PAX wardrobes for use by multiple people?

lulaleHello everyone,
I am facing the challenge of organizing an Ikea PAX system for multiple people within a household, and I want to do this as efficiently as possible. My main question is: How can I design and structure a PAX system so that different users can have their own clearly defined and organized spaces, avoiding confusion or constant disputes over storage?
It is also important for me to know how to best combine the system with shelves, drawers, or accessories to meet different needs – for example, for various types of clothing, shoe storage, or rarely used items in separate sections.
Does anyone have experience sharing a PAX system among multiple people and can offer tips on division, labeling, or other organizational tricks? I already have a basic setup but want to optimize it further.
Thank you in advance!

Good morning!
Regarding your request on how to organize the PAX system efficiently for multiple users, I have put together a brief guide:
- Define zones: Assign one or more clearly defined sections to each person. Use the modular structure of PAX, with segments about 50-70 cm (20-28 inches) wide per user.
- Use accessories purposefully: Drawers with dividers, pull-out shelves, or trouser racks help keep things tidy and make items easier to find.
- Adjust the height of hanging rods: Install different levels for adults and children.
- Labeling: Attach small, discreet labels to the inside surfaces of the doors, so everyone knows which section belongs to whom.
A common mistake is mixing everything randomly, which leads to frustration. It’s better to set rules for space usage, such as not storing another person’s clothes in your own area.
Summary: Clear zones, well-planned accessories, and small visual cues make a big difference. I hope this helps!

Define zones: Set up one or more clearly defined areas for each person.I can only confirm this. Another tip is to consider different usage frequencies among the users. For example, if one person has many jackets or suits and the other has fewer garments, it makes sense to adjust the storage space per user flexibly.
Furthermore, I recommend including a section within a shared PAX wardrobe for items used by everyone to avoid unnecessary confusion.
Another point is regular monitoring and adjustment. The system should not be seen as static but can be changed according to the season or changing needs.
Personally, I have had good experiences saving photos of the labels on my smartphone in case I’m ever unsure while putting things away about which area was intended for what.

Timmyse363 Jan 2022 18:51I really appreciate the concrete suggestions made here so far. However, I also want to emphasize that the psychological aspect of sharing a common storage space is important. Conflicts can easily arise if one person feels that the other is not respecting the agreed-upon areas or is trying to take up more space.
For this reason, I recommend setting clear rules from the beginning and possibly including a buffer area for spontaneous needs.
From my perspective, this is essential as well. Flexibility reduces stress.
I have also put up a small board on the PAX unit where we note if spaces are swapped or things are reorganized, so there is room for communication.

I’m also interested if anyone has practical tips on how to establish this kind of communication in everyday life without it becoming too much effort.
Additionally, thanks to everyone for the advice on zone division and accessories. I think I’ll start with clear labels and dedicated compartments for now.
Does anyone know of simple products from Ikea or third-party manufacturers that work well as additions to PAX systems when multiple users share them? For example, I was thinking of pull-out trouser racks or extra drawer inserts.
