Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to set up a walk-in closet and am very interested in the Ikea Pax wardrobe series. Since the options with Pax are very diverse, especially regarding different widths, heights, depths, and interior configurations, I have the following question: Which Ikea Pax wardrobes are particularly suitable for walk-in closets?
I am especially concerned with aspects such as:
- optimal dimensions for small to medium-sized walk-in closets
- flexibility in interior design, e.g., for shoes, hanging clothes, drawers
- stability and quality of workmanship with frequent use
- sensible combinations, especially when the closet space can be freely planned
If anyone has experience with specific models or combinations, or can offer helpful tips for planning and selection, I would greatly appreciate your insights!

Walk-in wardrobes are particularly suitable with Pax wardrobes that have a depth of 50 or 75 cm (20 or 30 inches). The 35 cm (14 inches) depth is too narrow, as hangers do not fit well.
I recommend choosing the 75 cm (30 inches) depth to provide enough space for clothes and to accommodate interior fittings effectively.

Hello nidilu,
your question is very well considered. I can add that the height of the Pax wardrobe is also crucial, especially if you can plan from floor to ceiling. The standard heights are 201 cm (79 inches) or 236 cm (93 inches).
- For a walk-in closet, 236 cm (93 inches) is often recommended, as it allows optimal use of storage space.
- The widths of 50, 75, and 100 cm (20, 30, and 39 inches) all work well, depending on the room size.
Regarding the interior fittings, I highly recommend multiple hanging rods at different heights, drawers for smaller items, and shelves. For shoes, the Pax interior shoe organizers are very practical.
Additionally, the wardrobes are generally stable as long as they are properly assembled and, if necessary, secured to the wall.
I wish you much success with your planning! If you like, I can also give you tips on using Ikea’s planning tool.

From my perspective, the following criteria are important when choosing Pax wardrobes for walk-in closets:
- Depth: 75 cm (30 inches) is better than 50 cm (20 inches) to store hanging clothes without deformation.
- Width: variable, depending on the room, but combination options with 50 cm (20 inches) and 75 cm (30 inches) provide flexible solutions.
- Height: wardrobes with a height of 236 cm (93 inches) make better use of storage space and feel less cramped.
- Interior fittings: Ikea offers numerous inserts – shoe racks, drawers, tie holders, and more.
In summary, 75 x 236 cm (30 x 93 inches) Pax wardrobes are the best starting point for a functional walk-in closet.

My walk-in closet has a ceiling height of 240 cm (7 ft 10½ in), so I would actually like to choose the wardrobes that are just under 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) tall. For the space from floor to ceiling, I also want to plan shelves for items that are rarely used.

Should I invest in a wardrobe with 50 cm (20 inches) depth or rather go fully for 75 cm (30 inches), or maybe combine both? Thinking about saving space versus versatility.
I am referring to nidilu’s question about the appropriate depth.
From a technical and practical perspective, a depth of 75 cm (30 inches) is clearly preferable for hanging clothes. The width of hangers is usually around 43-45 cm (17-18 inches), and with the cupboard depth plus some space at the back, there is enough room so clothes are not crushed and wrinkles are avoided.
Cupboards with a depth of 50 cm (20 inches) are very suitable for shelves or drawers, for example, for folded clothes or accessories. Therefore, a combination of both depths can be quite sensible depending on your needs.
Additionally, the frame depth should be considered, as it is greater with 75 cm (30 inches) depth and can carry more load, which is important for large cupboards.
Recommendation: 75 cm (30 inches) depth for hanging clothes, 50 cm (20 inches) depth for dressers/shelves.
