Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to buy Ikea Platsa furniture and would like to customize it as much as possible. Therefore, my question to the community is: What are the options for personalizing Platsa furniture without compromising its functionality? I am thinking not only about external changes like color or handles but also about smart modifications or extensions that make better use of the storage space. Are there proven techniques, special materials, or recommended accessories?

I look forward to your experiences and tips, especially practical ideas that can turn my IKEA Platsa cabinet into a true one-of-a-kind piece.

Tip for redesigning: Try different handles instead of the standard ones. This is the easiest change to make Platsa feel more personal instantly.

Handles made of metal or leather straps can make a big difference.

In addition to the previous posts: If you really want to tailor Platsa to your needs, the best approach is a combination of modularity and DIY customization.

- Personalize the interior with custom-built inserts made from plywood or MDF, especially for storing specific items.
- Pay close attention to the weight of the stored items and equip the furniture with sturdier hinges or metal brackets if necessary.

You can also replace or decorate the back panels to enhance the overall appearance. They are often underestimated, even though they have a significant visual impact.

Integrating lighting: LED strips or small recessed lights installed inside provide better visibility and a modern appearance.

I think that’s great! LEDs not only add necessary functionality to the furniture but also create a wow factor. I installed them on my Platsa and love the flexibility. It’s best to use battery-powered LEDs if there’s no power outlet nearby.

You can also make drawers from simple wooden boxes that you paint to match and fit with handles. Cost-effective and flexible.

How can I best proceed here to stay modular and avoid relying too much on rigid systems?

One option would be to combine Platsa components with other Ikea systems (such as Faktum drawers), provided the dimensions fit reasonably well. This way, you can create essentially custom-made modules while remaining flexible.

It is important to measure precisely and possibly check the opening mechanisms. If in doubt, use hinges that can be adjusted.

Additionally, I would recommend creating a plan beforehand using SketchUp or similar software to virtually assemble the components.

how to apply films so they last long and don’t form bubbles?

Regarding application: I recommend not to save on inexpensive films, but to choose a slightly higher-quality self-adhesive vinyl film. It may be a bit more expensive initially, but it is easier to work with and resistant to UV radiation as well as moisture.

Important for the application process:
- Room temperature should be around 20°C (68°F)
- Clean the surface with isopropanol
- After applying the film, carefully heat it with a hot air gun to further activate the adhesive and make the film more flexible

If you have questions about the exact procedure or material quality, I’m happy to help.
