Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookcase and noticed that the doors don’t close perfectly during assembly. I would like to know how to properly adjust the doors on the Billy to avoid gaps or misalignment. What screws or adjustment options are available exactly, and what is the best way to proceed without damaging the doors or the bookcase? I would appreciate a detailed description of the individual steps, including advice on the necessary tools and what to watch out for. Thanks in advance!

Which screws or adjustment options are available exactly, and what is the best way to proceed?Hey guplo! At Billy, the doors usually have hinges that can be adjusted in three directions: height, depth, and sideways. You just need a Phillips screwdriver for this.
I recommend first loosening the screws on the hinges (don’t unscrew them completely!), then you can align the door. With a bit of patience, you can get the doors back in proper alignment. I find it’s pretty easy and even somewhat enjoyable. 🙂
Important: Sometimes the hinges are quite tight, so don’t rush. Also, make sure to adjust only one setting at a time to keep track of your changes. Good luck!

The procedure should be as follows:
1. Loosen the screws slightly
2. Carefully align the door (gently, without applying force)
3. Tighten the screws again
If the door no longer fits precisely within the frame, small adjustments in depth can ensure the best fit. A medium-sized Phillips screwdriver is sufficient for this task.
Additionally, I recommend checking the hinges and screws occasionally after extended use to ensure they remain tight, as wood can warp slightly due to moisture.

What is the best way to proceed without damaging the doors or the shelf?I would especially recommend being very careful with the screw tightening torque during adjustment, particularly with older Billy shelves made of thinner particleboard. Over-tightening can damage the threads and impair the hinge function.
Additionally, a thin felt or rubber strip on the inside of the doors can help if the doors slightly rub against each other or the shelf frame. This not only protects the surface but can even improve the closing action.
So, if you follow the steps from pinpa and RETRAVIS and pay attention to these details, you should be able to adjust the doors thoroughly.

Over-tightening can damage the threadsAbsolutely – and unfortunately, this sometimes only becomes noticeable later when a door wobbles or can no longer be adjusted properly.
Just a small addition: if the doors are only slightly warped, applying gentle counterpressure during adjustment can help. And if you enjoy it, guplo, you can also try loosening and then gently retightening the screws with a careful touch; this often eliminates small tensions as well.
Oh, and of course: always stay relaxed, the Billy tuning is fun too. ;-)
