Hello everyone,
I am considering buying a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA and painting it myself. Has anyone here had experience with painting or refinishing a Kallax unit on their own? I am especially interested in the preparation process (sanding, priming), which type of paint works best, and how to make the surface durable after painting. Are there any special tips or precautions to ensure the result not only looks good but also lasts a long time? I would appreciate any advice or personal experiences!

A small additional note to the previous recommendations: Melamine resin coatings are indeed very smooth and not easy to repaint. It is advisable to use a fine sanding pad or sandpaper with a grit of 220 to slightly roughen the surface without damaging the furniture piece. For priming, I recommend a bonding primer specifically designed for plastics. Afterwards, you can use acrylic paints suitable for furniture. It is also important to use an appropriate brush or a foam roller to avoid brush marks. Sealing with a matte clear coat further increases scratch and impact resistance.

And that way, the shelf retains its structure without any damage to the edges. I can confirm this. During my first painting, I sanded the edges too aggressively. Although it didn’t harm the shelf, it didn’t look good. So: better to sand carefully and proceed slowly.
Thanks for all the tips so far! I’m still curious whether anyone has applied the paint with a roller or a brush? I’m undecided on what works better for a smooth surface, as brushes often leave streaks and rollers might not reach the corners as well. Maybe someone has had practical experience with this?
