Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a few Kallax shelves for my holiday home and now have some doubts about their load-bearing capacity. I am especially interested in whether Kallax shelves prove to be stable for long-term use under changing climatic conditions – in particular fluctuations in humidity and temperature.

Can you share your experiences regarding how Kallax furniture performs in the day-to-day use of a holiday home, especially when heavier items are often stored or the furniture is exposed to some moisture? Are problems like warping, sagging shelves, or damaged edges common?

I would really appreciate if you could share your experiences, and also any tips on maintenance or additional reinforcement. Thanks in advance!

Additionally, I would like to point out:

Many users underestimate the effects of moisture exposure on particleboard and MDF panels. Even with melamine coating, the edges are often only veneered or coated and are not waterproof.

In a holiday home, it is therefore important to ventilate regularly and ideally use dehumidifiers to prevent moisture buildup in the room. For critical applications or heavy loads, Kallax is fairly sturdy, as the system’s construction is quite solid, but individual shelves should not be permanently overloaded.

To prevent warping, occasional checks are recommended, and reinforcement with metal brackets or wooden strips on the underside of the shelves may be necessary.

For long-term use, it is also worth considering resealing the surface to improve water resistance.

I have a Kallax in my holiday home used as a bookshelf in the living room. Its load capacity is completely sufficient for this purpose.

So far, there have been no issues due to moisture, probably because I have not placed it directly against uninsulated exterior walls and I ventilate the room well.

For maintenance: regular dusting and avoiding placing wet items directly on the shelves to protect the edges has proven effective.

Kallax is made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particleboard with a melamine resin coating. These materials are vulnerable to prolonged moisture exposure.

This sums it up well. For houses with fluctuating humidity levels, it means: be cautious.

I recommend using Kallax only for light to moderate loads and regularly checking for early signs of swelling. For heavier use, I suggest solid wood or metal shelves, which handle the climate better.

A tip: Avoid placing the Kallax units directly on cold floors. Using an underlay can help reduce moisture from below.

A tip: Also avoid placing the Kallax modules directly on cold floors.

This is an important point. Although Kallax items are sturdy, moisture absorption from the floor can quickly cause material damage.

For increased stability under heavy load, solid wood shelves can be custom-made to fit the Kallax frame dimensions.

Additionally, make sure that Kallax shelves are placed on level surfaces to prevent stress and deformation.
