Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a few Kallax shelves for my holiday home and now have some doubts about their load-bearing capacity. I am especially interested in whether Kallax shelves prove to be stable for long-term use under changing climatic conditions – in particular fluctuations in humidity and temperature.

Can you share your experiences regarding how Kallax furniture performs in the day-to-day use of a holiday home, especially when heavier items are often stored or the furniture is exposed to some moisture? Are problems like warping, sagging shelves, or damaged edges common?

I would really appreciate if you could share your experiences, and also any tips on maintenance or additional reinforcement. Thanks in advance!

The Kallax shelves are primarily designed for indoor use, which means they are not specifically protected against moisture or temperature fluctuations. The manufacturer states a load capacity of up to 13 kg (29 lbs) per shelf.

In holiday homes, where moisture variations are common, materials such as particleboard may warp or swell. Therefore, proper treatment (sealing) or the use of shelves with a coated surface is recommended.

In practice, I have seen some users add extra reinforcements (e.g., metal brackets under the shelves) to prevent sagging under heavy loads. That could also be an option for you.

I have a Kallax unit in the holiday home and use it for books and dishes. It holds up well under load, but I wouldn’t place heavy items on it. After extended use, moisture damage becomes visible on the edges.

I will try to approach the topic systematically:

1. Material: Kallax is made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF/particleboard) with a melamine resin coating. These materials are vulnerable to prolonged exposure to moisture.

2. Load Capacity: The manufacturer specifies a maximum of 13 kg (29 lbs) per shelf.

3. Moisture & Climate: Moisture can cause the edges to swell. Tip: Lighten the load on the shelves and keep them dry whenever possible. For vacation homes that are only used seasonally, it is recommended to empty the shelves before leaving and avoid storing damp items.

4. Stabilization: To prevent sagging, metal brackets or additional boards can be placed underneath.

5. Breathability: The material reacts to moisture in the room, so consistently high humidity levels are harmful.

Conclusion: Kallax is suitable for use in vacation homes if you respect the load limits and maintain an appropriate indoor climate.

That matches my experience. At first, I had concerns because my vacation home is located on the coast, where it is often damp and salty.

After one year, I can say that the Kallax shelves do their job, although I make sure not to store heavy items there long-term and never leave the shelves damp.

Sometimes you wonder if you’re making the right choice with affordable furniture, but I feel that with Kallax in the vacation home, I have found an acceptable compromise.

Kallax is suitable for medium loads. For heavy equipment, it is better to use sturdier shelves or metal shelving.
