Hello everyone,
I am considering getting a KALLAX shelf from IKEA for my home office to store heavy binders. Since these binders can weigh several kilograms (pounds), and I want to ensure the shelf’s long-term stability, I would like to know: who of you uses KALLAX for heavy binders—does it hold up?
I’m especially interested in practical experience with its load-bearing capacity and whether the shelf distorts or even breaks over time. Maybe you also have tips on how to reinforce the shelf in case heavy binders become an issue.
Looking forward to your feedback and experiences!

flo-Theres8 Jun 2023 10:33I have KALLAX in my office, where I store heavy binders weighing up to about 6 kg (13 lbs) per compartment. The shelves generally support the weight well, but I recommend monitoring the shelves to ensure they don’t sag too much.
A practical tip for especially heavy loads is to avoid fully loading the shelves and to store the heaviest binders on the lower levels. Additionally, I installed sturdy wall brackets to prevent tipping.
Overall, KALLAX is solid but not a heavy-duty shelving solution.

Thanks for the question, I’ve been wondering about this too! I’ve been storing my binders for some time in a KALLAX unit, but I’ve noticed that the middle shelves are starting to bow. This makes me a bit concerned because I want to keep the documents for a long time.
Could you maybe share how many binders you have per shelf? The weight per shelf is definitely crucial. I’m considering whether there might be a way to better distribute the load. Perhaps there are also reinforced inserts?

Regarding KALLAX and high load capacity: The KALLAX series is primarily designed for moderate loads and is not intended as a heavy-duty shelving unit. According to IKEA, the maximum load capacity per shelf is approximately 13 kg (29 lbs) evenly distributed.
There is a real risk of sagging with heavy binders. Users report minimal warping that can increase over time.
A recommendation: For heavy loads, you can add additional metal brackets or sturdy wooden boards as support. Securing the shelving unit to the wall with screws also improves stability and safety.

For my binders, I reach about 8-10 kg (18-22 pounds) per shelf when fully loaded. Still, it would be interesting to know if the shelf starts to curve only minimally at first and then worsens over several months.

Could you maybe also say how many binders you have per shelf?Flo-Theres also mentioned this. I’m curious whether having multiple binders on one shelf is more stressful for the material, or if spreading the weight across several binders actually helps distribute the load better.
KALLAX shelves can hold heavy binders up to about 10-12 kg (22-26 lbs) per compartment, but not more on a permanent basis.
Make sure to distribute the load as evenly as possible.
It is best to secure the shelf to the wall to increase safety.
For real heavy-duty requirements, consider specialized shelving units instead.
