Hello everyone,
Lately, I have noticed that the edges of my KALLAX shelves are chipping in some areas. This mainly happens at the corners and affects not only the visible laminate but sometimes also the particleboard underneath. Now I am wondering: Should I file a complaint about the furniture, as I believe this indicates poor workmanship or material quality, or would it be better to fix the damaged spots myself using DIY methods like edge banding or repair kits?
I would really appreciate it if you could share your experiences or recommendations so I can better assess how serious this is and how to handle it.

I completely understand your concern, Remonu. Especially when you invest money in something, you want it to last and look good.
Sometimes you feel torn between filing a complaint and trying to fix it yourself, particularly when time is short and the effort is frustrating.
Has anyone here ever filed a claim with Ikea due to chipped edges and can share their experience with the response? That might be helpful for Remonu.

Hello Remonu,
I am familiar with the issue of chipping edges on KALLAX shelves as well. IKEA uses particleboard with a melamine coating for these shelves, which is not very resistant to impact on the edges. In my experience, such chipping often occurs from minor impacts or exposure to moisture.
However, if the damage appears early and without an obvious cause, it is definitely worth making a claim. IKEA is usually accommodating and offers replacements or refunds.
If you choose to do a DIY repair, I recommend lightly sanding the damaged areas first and then applying edge strips made of plastic or wood. This helps prevent further chipping and provides a neat finish.
To prevent damage, make sure to protect the edges well during transport or moving, and avoid placing wet objects directly on the panels.

If chipping occurs later, it can be due to moisture, installation errors, or simply careless handling. My storage room is dry, and the shelf was assembled correctly. Careless handling can be ruled out. So, the only remaining causes are material quality or workmanship.
One more tip to avoid damage: When setting up or transporting, make sure to place items on soft surfaces and avoid bumping into doors or walls.
I also recommend carefully checking IKEA’s warranty or return period. Even if the official deadlines are tight, it’s worth being persistent, as quality defects often don’t become apparent immediately.

If not, repair kits from the hardware store work well to restore the appearance.
