Hello everyone,

I am considering getting a KALLAX shelf from IKEA for my home office to store heavy binders. Since these binders can weigh several kilograms (pounds), and I want to ensure the shelf’s long-term stability, I would like to know: who of you uses KALLAX for heavy binders—does it hold up?

I’m especially interested in practical experience with its load-bearing capacity and whether the shelf distorts or even breaks over time. Maybe you also have tips on how to reinforce the shelf in case heavy binders become an issue.

Looking forward to your feedback and experiences!

I use KALLAX for heavy binders and have noticed that the shelves tend to sag slightly over time.

My solution: placing IKEA shelves underneath as additional reinforcement. This works better than using the original shelves alone.

Otherwise, no problems horizontally, but you can definitely feel it in the middle.

Here is a brief guide for anyone planning to use KALLAX for heavy binders:

1. Estimate the weight per shelf: maximum 13 kg (29 lbs) according to the manufacturer.
2. Distribute the weight evenly; using multiple binders can help spread the load better.
3. Reinforce the shelves: wooden boards or thin metal profiles can be installed between the shelf and the frame.
4. Secure the shelving unit to the wall to prevent tipping and stability issues.
5. Check regularly: small shims can be used to correct any warping.

Common mistakes are overloading and dynamic loads (frequent pulling of binders), which cause the material to age faster.

I can understand very well how important robustness is to you. In my experience with KALLAX, the shelf is reliable under moderate loads, but as soon as you load it to the maximum, the stability quickly becomes critical.

That sounds like a practical approach that I would also support. Sometimes it’s the small adjustments that make a big difference.

Have you come across more affordable alternatives that have a similar aesthetic but higher load capacity? I’m open to suggestions.

Regarding the number of binders: I usually have 4–6 medium-sized binders per shelf, which weighs about 6–8 kg (13–18 lbs).

From my own experience, the shelf does bend slightly, but not significantly. It is important to regularly check the shelf and adjust it if necessary, especially when removing items frequently.

I’m curious whether having multiple binders on one shelf is more of a strain on the material, or if distributing the load across several binders is actually better.

Distribution does matter: Several smaller binders spread the load better than one very heavy binder placed in the center.

Thank you for the helpful advice and well-structured tips, especially from the team here.

You have helped me better understand what really matters when using a KALLAX shelving unit for heavy binders. I will secure the shelving unit to the wall and probably reinforce the shelves to ensure long-term stability.

If anyone gains further insights in the future, I look forward to updates. Thanks again for the detailed discussion!
