Hello everyone,

I’m currently dealing with the issue that my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit is only partially suitable for storing my vinyl records. Specifically, the original construction without any additional reinforcement barely supports the weight of the records, and I’ve noticed that the shelves sag slightly and will probably warp over time. I’m considering whether it makes sense to reinforce the shelves and, if so, how best to do this without completely losing the original appearance or undertaking overly complicated modifications. Does anyone have experience with this or tips on how to make the KALLAX unit more stable for vinyl storage in a simple and effective way? Thanks in advance!

Hey, I know that problem all too well! A quick tip: I simply screwed sturdy wooden strips underneath the shelves, which are barely visible because they’re set back in depth. This basically provides a second layer of support. Not a big project, but it looks great and can hold a lot more weight. A bit of DIY, but really effective 🙂

Wow, it’s great that you bring up this topic! I’ve also wondered if my KALLAX is strong enough for my record collection because it really feels strange when you reach in. I haven’t added any reinforcement yet, but maybe I’ll put in some wooden slats sometime. Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

I completely understand, it's the same for me. You invest quite a bit in your record collection, so you don't want the shelf to give out. Sometimes I wonder if I should build the shelf differently — but that, of course, involves a lot of effort. Maybe a targeted reinforcement is a good and practical solution, especially if there are no skilled craftsmen at home. Has anyone else considered alternatives?

Reinforcement definitely helps. Use metal brackets under the floors. Easy to install, barely visible, and very stable.

To make the KALLAX suitable for heavy vinyl records, I recommend reinforcing the shelves with additional cross braces made of wood or metal. This helps distribute the load more evenly and prevents bowing. A precise installation is important to maintain the appearance. Screw-on angle brackets are a good option, as they can be mounted discreetly.
