Hello everyone,
I’m currently dealing with the issue that my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit is only partially suitable for storing my vinyl records. Specifically, the original construction without any additional reinforcement barely supports the weight of the records, and I’ve noticed that the shelves sag slightly and will probably warp over time. I’m considering whether it makes sense to reinforce the shelves and, if so, how best to do this without completely losing the original appearance or undertaking overly complicated modifications. Does anyone have experience with this or tips on how to make the KALLAX unit more stable for vinyl storage in a simple and effective way? Thanks in advance!

This topic also raises some uncertainties for me. You want to maintain the nice look of the KALLAX, but safety for the bulky record collection is more important. I notice that despite the reinforcements, I often still feel a bit uneasy. Some small tips here are great! How do you handle the appearance – are the reinforcements very noticeable?

How do you handle the appearance? I once tried matching the reinforcements exactly to the color of the KALLAX unit, which helps a lot. You can also use small plywood or beech strips that are sanded and treated with oil to give a natural look. This creates a cozy, warm appearance in the room – almost as if they belong to the design.
Thanks for the many responses so far. Here is my summary: Stabilization from below using battens and brackets, plus a possible back panel or additional cross brace at the front or rear to prevent warping. For the appearance, choose materials and colors that match as closely as possible – sounds like a good plan. I will probably start with wooden battens and upgrade if necessary. Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips!
