Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen layout using the Ikea METOD system and want to focus on ergonomics and space-saving solutions. Specifically, I am interested in how to best coordinate the depth, height, and arrangement of the base cabinets as well as the wall cabinets to allow for efficient workflow without wasting too much space. Does anyone have experience or recommendations regarding which module sizes and internal fittings have proven effective? Tips on smart storage solutions are especially important, for example for waste sorting, spices, or small appliances, without making the countertop appear cluttered. I would appreciate knowledgeable and practical advice!

I recommend choosing 40cm (16 inches) deep wall cabinets with METOD; it makes the kitchen feel less bulky and provides easier access to your items. For base cabinets, 60cm (24 inches) is the standard and ideal depth. Use drawers for storage, as they slide out more smoothly than doors.

The topic of kitchen ergonomics is closely related to optimizing workflow. For METOD kitchen units, you should ensure that work surfaces are at a height of about 91 to 93 cm (36 to 37 inches), as this corresponds to the average elbow height and helps prevent back pain. For more comfort, 95 cm (37 inches) is possible, depending on your body height.

Regarding depth: base cabinets with a depth of 60 cm (24 inches) are standard, but using wall cabinets that are 37 or 40 cm (15 or 16 inches) deep combined with a wide shelf at the edge can create a more open feeling in the space while also improving ergonomics.

To save space, I recommend using corner solutions such as carousel or magic corner inserts, which can be well integrated with METOD. Using tall cabinets with internal pull-outs is also useful for storing frequently used items in a way that is easier on your back.

Can you say how large your kitchen is and which workflows are especially important to you? That would help provide more specific recommendations.

Thanks for the hint! The kitchen is about 3.2 meters long and relatively narrow, approximately 1.8 meters wide. My priorities are short distances between the sink, stove, and refrigerator (work triangle), well-organized storage for cooking utensils and food, and as much free countertop space as possible. I also want to incorporate waste separation with at least two bins without making the kitchen run feel overcrowded.

Your information is very helpful. For your room size, the following adjustments are recommended:

- Use base cabinets with a depth of 60 cm (24 inches) to provide sufficient storage space.
- Use wall cabinets with a depth of 40 cm (16 inches) to avoid narrowing the walkway too much.
- Plan the work triangle to be as compact as possible, keeping the stove, sink, and refrigerator within 120 to 210 cm (47 to 83 inches) of each other.
- For waste separation, I recommend a pull-out unit under the sink with at least two separate containers, possibly with a sliding mechanism to make them easy to access.
- Use internal drawers in base cabinets for spices, pots, and small appliances to increase organization and accessibility.

Make sure the countertop is at least 60 cm (24 inches) deep and as wide as possible; having at least 60 cm (24 inches) of free space next to the stove greatly facilitates food preparation.

Great topic! 😎 I designed my IKEA METOD kitchen with 40 cm (16 inches) deep wall cabinets to create more working space.

For waste sorting, I installed small bins in a pull-out drawer, which is very practical and looks neat. A small tip: use power strips with USB ports in the upper shelves – perfect for smart kitchen gadgets that would otherwise take up space.

Also, good LED strips under the wall cabinets not only provide light but also make the countertop appear larger and more inviting.

Not to forget: when planning with METOD, there are many practical interior fittings that optimize space usage. Just try it out in the IKEA planner and adjust as needed!
