Then I would also like to introduce our building project here and keep you updated.

First, a brief introduction about us. He (42.5 years; controller in healthcare), she (38.5 years; full-time teacher), child (8.75 years; fully dependent). Our household net income is currently about €6,400 (approximately $6,800) plus performance bonuses, 13th-month salary, overtime, etc. We own a 1,462 sqm (15,735 sq ft) plot of land in Fichtenwalde. The remaining debt on the land is €37,000 (about $39,000). According to official land value guidelines, the land is valued at €146,200 (about $156,000) (€100 / sqm). The market price is around €400,000 to €600,000 (recent sale prices). We submitted the building permit application including the land conversion at the end of December. We expect approval by mid to late July.

The construction company is KB Brandis from Jüterbog. External site supervision will be handled by Bauherrenhilfe with 13 appointments.

Now about the house. It will be a 144 sqm (1,550 sq ft) bungalow plus a 12 sqm (130 sq ft) covered terrace with the following additions:
- Ceiling height 3.00 m (9.8 ft)
- Electric roller shutters (including smart home integration)
- Double-sided laminated windows (wood-colored; RC3 security rating)
- Brine-to-water heat pump with ground collectors due to water protection area (Bosch Compress 7800i LW)
- Hydraulic balancing of the underfloor heating
- Controlled residential ventilation with heat recovery (Bosch)
- Motion detectors from a security company
- 13 kWp photovoltaic system, including battery preparation
- 10 m³ (2,650 gal) cistern for rainwater use
- Doorbell with video function
- Wallbox preparation for electric vehicle charging
- Exterior lighting

Floor plan attached.

We have not yet finalized financing (although discussions have taken place). So far, we have invested up to €30,000 (approximately $32,000) from our own savings during the planning phase. This is almost all of our equity. However, we continue to save about €2,750 (approximately $2,920) per month. The monthly mortgage payment is expected to be around €1,650 (about $1,750) plus additional costs of approximately €200-250 (about $210-265) (taking into account the photovoltaic system). This means when we move into the house, we will still have savings of at least €1,500 (about $1,590) per month.

The construction contract will be signed within the next few weeks. The prices (recently discussed with the company) correspond to the offer and commitment as of September 2020.

The price per square meter of the house (according to the latest offer and full specification) will be €2,700 (about $2,870). This includes everything, such as painting, flooring, etc. The overall costs are structured as follows:
House: €378,000 (about $402,000)
Land conversion including reclassification: €25,000 (about $26,600)
Additional building costs: €40,000 (about $42,500)
Outdoor facilities: €25,000 (about $26,600)
Total financing volume: €468,000 (about $498,000)

Grundriss eines Hauses: Wohnzimmer, Küche, Schlaf-/Kinderzimmer, Bad, Flur, Terrasse.

Yes, as someone from Brandenburg, I also felt personally offended by @Tom1978. That’s true.

I feel the same way; nobody is completely free from this. I appreciate that you say it openly. If we all become a bit more aware of this, things could become more peaceful again. The small racist in me also comes up from time to time. Maybe sometimes we swing the topics too far in the other direction in certain areas and end up at the opposite extreme, but when it comes to xenophobia, there are no two sides.

A tradesperson recently told me that on the other side of the Elbe River, they have a different culture, even though they belong to the same municipality. You don’t necessarily have to be a foreigner; here, just crossing the Elbe, which is about 200 meters (650 feet) wide, is enough.

Anyone who has been to Belfast or Derry knows that even a street without a fence can be a deadly border.

I didn’t recognize this at first; only when affected people showed me the many small, insidious details did I fully understand the extent.

I am not trying to defend everyday racism (which, by the way, I tend to notice more in my parents’ generation). However, I found the reactions to an alleged quote quite extreme.

Your self-righteous, offensive nonsense is punishable by law, plain and simple; it is stupidly mean anyway, but what doesn’t slip out during the day when you, as a high achiever and pillar of our society, are cruising around in the recently inherited Opel Monza!

Is there a limit to how one should react to racist remarks? I don’t think so. I’m not trying to balance anything out or retaliate; with my strongly worded response, I am simply trying to show how painful such comments can be for those affected.

Here in Saxony, there’s no difference—I actually have the feeling it is fueled more by the younger generation. I just want to make it clear how quickly casual remarks can hurt others. That’s why I fully understand your topic about Brandenburg, and you have probably read some of my comments on that!
I am what people call a "Wessi" and I wouldn’t let anyone get away with saying something against "Ossis" in general or East Germany, especially since my wife is from Dresden. At the same time, tradespeople come to my house and are treated very kindly, and from them, I constantly hear things like "Wessi" used. For them, it’s a kind of general excuse for everything that goes wrong in their lives.
The most recent example happened on my own terrace when my brother-in-law told a story where, of course, the Wessi was too stupid for everything. After a few days of feeling uneasy, I realized I had been hearing this repeatedly and next time I will clearly and openly ask what he means by that. I think he even likes me somewhat and doesn’t realize that it hurts me when someone says such things, even in my own home. He isn’t referring to me directly, yet he really means me—I would never think to speak so disparagingly about Ossis, especially not in the house of an "Ossi." It is deeply ingrained in everyday language, and I find that highly damaging.
So if you asked someone affected by this, I think they would find my reaction appropriate. Honestly, I’d much rather not have to read something like that at all.

I also read it with surprise and just wondered, why would he move there then 🙄 is he from Berlin or Goslar 😎 ?
After building, he’ll probably discover Brandenburg and complain when he moves away again 🙂

Being a contributor and such didn’t lead me to an Opel Monza – what did I do wrong???
