Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Platsa shelving system and am considering customizing its appearance. I’m interested in whether it makes sense to paint or apply a film to these furniture pieces in order to change their surface or color. Specifically, my question is: Can IKEA Platsa be painted or covered with a film without compromising the quality or stability of the surface? I would like to know if the surface is suitable for this, what kind of preparation might be necessary, and if there are particular types of paint or films that work especially well with this material and furniture series. Thanks in advance!

PLATSA typically consists of glued particleboard panels with a melamine resin surface that is relatively smooth and hard. Because of this, paint or adhesive film may not adhere properly without preparation. If you want to paint it, you should first lightly sand the surface and use an appropriate primer. Applying adhesive film is generally possible, but self-adhesive films are only recommended if the surface is absolutely clean and smooth, and the film is of good quality. For long-lasting results, painting with a two-component (2K) paint is often the better option.

I totally agree! If you want a real change that lasts a bit longer, then paint it. Wrapping has its appeal but is more suitable for quick, visual upgrades. And when the next explorers with wanderlust stand in the hallway soon, the film wears out quickly. 🙂

Painting yes, but you must sand and dust off beforehand. Film (foil) is possible, but only matte, smooth, no texture. Without proper preparation, it won’t last long.

Hello Sinderim, I would advise you to pay close attention to the type of paint you use. Acrylic or water-based synthetic resin paints are well suited because they are less harmful and still durable. Some also recommend 2K (two-component) paints for increased durability, but they are more complex to apply. It is important that you sand properly before painting to roughen the smooth surface, and then thoroughly clean the surface afterwards. When applying adhesive film, the panel must be completely grease-free, and you should use self-adhesive films with good resistance to aging. PLATSA consists of multilayer glued MDF or particleboard components; sanding can create some dust, but otherwise they are quite sturdy.

Painting is possible, but only with good-quality sandpaper and primer. You can apply vinyl wrap if the surface is smooth and dust-free. Avoid complex textures or edges, as the wrap will peel off.
