Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Platsa shelving system and am considering customizing its appearance. I’m interested in whether it makes sense to paint or apply a film to these furniture pieces in order to change their surface or color. Specifically, my question is: Can IKEA Platsa be painted or covered with a film without compromising the quality or stability of the surface? I would like to know if the surface is suitable for this, what kind of preparation might be necessary, and if there are particular types of paint or films that work especially well with this material and furniture series. Thanks in advance!

It is important to use the right products, such as a suitable primer when painting and a high-quality film. Climate and usage also play a role, so careful preparation is essential to prevent later peeling or chipping.
On the technical side: The surface of Platsa is usually made of melamine-coated wood-based material. It is very durable but has a low porosity and a smooth texture, which makes adhesion more challenging. Therefore, proper surface preparation is necessary before painting, preferably light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (grit 220-320) and cleaning with a degreasing agent. For laminates, specially designed PVC films with high elasticity suited for furniture are recommended. The durability of the lamination also depends on the quality of the application and the level of wear and tear.

That’s why I strongly recommend always using a primer; otherwise, after a short time, you’ll face issues with paint or foil peeling off. If you want to avoid sanding, you can also try adhesion promoters, but sanding remains the most reliable method.
